Sushi Yasuda Sushi Yasuda is the best sushi experience I have ever had for so many reasons. Every piece of sushi, every piece of sashimi, the wasabi, Chef Tom, the tea, the atmosphere, everything. After this first visit, I am now forever spoiled and may never be able to eat sushi anywhere else again. I have spent more on sushi meals at 15 East, Inagiku, and Tomoe. None can compare. The reason I hadn't come to Sushi Yasuda earlier is because I thought it would be a really expensive meal but I have found that it really doesn't have to be. Winnie and I each ordered the Sushi and Sashimi combo. You are given a choice of four pieces of...

But this time, it was a little bit more planned out. I took the wife to Sushi Yasuda last night to celebrate Valentines Day. I wanted to avoid the mass hordes of people booking restaurants for the Hallmark Holiday. Naturally, we sat at Chef Yasuda's counter and we let him have his way for us. A word of advice, I recommend you sit with Yasuda san or Okuno san. At these prices.. all others just won't do. Chef Yasuda doesn't call his Chef's Tasting an "Omakase", but simply says... "May I pick my favorites for you?" Depending day to day, fish quality will change (ever so slightly), and a skilled sushi chef will be able to prepare the best...

So now I've been to both... It's time to weigh-in on the pros and cons. And crown my Fave. What could be more opposite than these two Masters of Fish. One is a pure Edo-style Sushi Chef who has honed his craft to preserving and exercising the traditional origins of sushi. The other is a master of layers and manipulator of taste. His dishes are unique and extremely dynamic in flavor. I'm pitting these two against one another for the shear sake of naming a #1 in the city. Hey, we're Americans... We like that kind of stuff... I understand there's Kuruma Zushi, Hatsuhana, Sushi-Den, Sushi Seki, Masa, Ichimura, and maybe even Ushiwakamaru...

The top sushi players of Manhattan have done a nice job positioning themselves in the market - Masa for the over-the-top-price-is-no-issue annual or bi-annual outings; Kuruma Zushi for a slightly less expensive fish-is-the-only-thing-that-matters meal; and Sushi Yasuda for a quick, informal, and far less expensive rice-is-king stop.
Lunch was no different than usual

Although I have never been to Japan, my guess is Sushi Yasuda is like being transported to Japan for the evening. English was not the language of choice among the patrons at the sushi bar at Sushi Yasuda last night,...

Which New York restaurant has the best sushi omakase? Leaving aside Masa and its stratospheric $375 prix fixe, the debate usually comes down to Sushi Yasuda and Kurumazushi. Over at eGullet, a discussion thread comparing the two is now in its fifth year.

With the discussion of late of how Rev. Moon's Unification Church (through linked companies) controls the world's supply of raw fish, perhaps Americans should stop grousing about the Arab stranglehold on oil, and start glancing nervously towards the mysterious East for its domination over Omega3. Whether this is a source of concern, the articles in Chicago Tribune and elsewhere remind us again, should we need to be reminded, how little we know of the process by which food magically appears.

And so i began my week of eating through New York City w/ Sushi Yasuda. When i last ate there, I felt it was a notch below Kuruma & Sawa - his fish couldn’t live up to the excellent rice. I rated it an 8.5/10. I wanted to give it another shot: This year seems to be spectacular for fish quality; can Yasuda measure up? Could i penetrate the philosophical differences between his rice first vs my fish first preference? Would the overall experience raise my score to a 9?
