My younger son and his friend are what we in the reviewing biz call "sushi virgins." When I learned that they would be spending spring break with me in New York, my initial question targeted dining. I didn't have profuse hopes for the response. As my older son once announced, his sib would make a great vegetarian if only he ate vegetables. He seemed to live on air, chips, Sprite, macaroni, and the odd taco. So I was startled when the response was "Japanese."

I loved Jewel Bako when it first opened. Not only was the sushi creative and delicious, the space was wonderful. The ceiling was encompassed with wonderful slats of wood. It made the space very warm, inviting, modern and Asian in feel at the same time. Great architecture.

In most publications, the stalwart food editor must visit a restaurant several times to make sure their great meal wasn't a fluke, or their horrible meal wasn't the result of the chef's bad day. In my book, you get one chance at greatness, and if you suck, I ain't coming back. That's the way it is with everybody anyway.

"We have some OUTSTANDING fish tonight!" enthused Jack Lamb, the owner of sushi nirvana Jewel Bako. After briefly perusing the menu, we decided to go with the chef's choice (omakase), which ended up being ten courses of utter delight!

This is one restaurant that sounds like it’s name—it is a shoebox-sized, jewel of a place, serving precious, glorious sushi and sashimi, as well as more traditional Japanese meals. The tiny, intimate, and chic East Village sliver of a space is owned by Jack and Grace Lamb, the husband and wife team behind Jack's Luxury Oyster Bar, across the street, and Blue Goose Foods, a takeout shop, around the corner. This picture-perfect couple makes it their mission to insure your experience is marked by warm service and gracious hospitality. The restaurant’s small size and popular following makes reserving ahead a good plan.
