That’s not wholly unusual: I head out to many restaurants in a prospecting vein, not in a must-write-individually-about-them vein, checking out a place I’ve never been, or a place I haven’t been to in a while, or a place that may have improved, or a place that changed ownership or chefs, or a place . . .

Being thankful is a state of being we sometimes have to remind ourselves to experience. We rush around, work, eat, work, eat, run, play, sleep. Repeat. Taking stock in what we have can sometimes (read: often) get lost on the feverish road of consumption we call life. Don’t get me wrong, I love to consume—food especially—but I do recognize that I sometimes have a tendency to see what I don’t have, rather than what I do. Perhaps it’s a sad state of affairs that we need a holiday attached to eating a turkey to put that sense of being grateful into our hearts. But I have been feeling very grateful lately. And this week, I was struck by how lucky I am to have Jamie and Susie in my life. They are two of my closest girlfriends and I adore and cherish them. This year, the three of us decided to have our own pre-Thanksgiving dinner, in honor of our friendship. We chose a neighborhood place we had never been but had always been jonesing to try: Beppe.

What is your vision of heaven? Mine is a place where there are always fresh, sun-kissed tomatoes and strawberries. I think I may have found a piece of heaven in Beppe, a Tuscan restaurant in Gramercy Park. Our waiter informed us that Beppe owns a farm in upstate New York. That would explain the astonishing intensity of the tomatoes in the pappa (tomato bread soup with basil and pecorino), pepolino (fresh flat pillows of pasta in a tomato sauce), and the romaine, fennel and tomato salad that accompanied my orata (white-fleshed Mediterranean fish roasted with garlic cloves, fresh oregano and lemon).
