Anyone who was living in NYC during the mid-80's remembers when Restaurant Florent opened and going there. The location was truly cutting edge. A small groovy diner in the middle of the Meat Market area on Gansevoort Street (nobody had...

When you're hungry, you tend to forget that your stomach will reach that point of over-satiated-ness. You know, when you feel like your stomach has expanded to reach your throat or that you're well into the gestation period with a new baby bolus. Dim sum looks manageable with its wide variety of enticing, cute little plates holding cute little portions, but those dishes hold lies. LIIIES! Tasty steamed, fried, baked, and sauteed lies.

Brunch & Gelato with Robyn! And a Small Dessert at Cafe Zaiya
Florent's décor reminds me of a diner evoking tons of energy from the diners. The menu mainly serves the traditional American food with touches of French flair and it's quite limited in selection. Their food is decent but considering its location in the Meatpacking District where there's a lot of bars and clubs, this is a good place to eat if you're drunk or just hungry at 2 AM.

As you can see we're busy blogging on this marathon morning instead of, well, running it. Okay, poaching it for the last 12 miles (well, actually miles 13-25, since it is tres uncool to go through the gates if you are a poacher). Could it have been the 8 Vintage Margaritas we had at Town Bar last night?? Naaaaaaah. We'll watch it on TV, go Lance Armstrong!

Out On The Scene with Ed Levine: Pizza at Adrienne's & Pastries at Financier
I became aware of Ed Levine in four stages. Stage One was reading about him in Ruth Reichl's "Garlic & Sapphires"; he's the subject of her chapter "The Missionary of the Delicious." Stage Two was seeing his books in bookstores: "New York Eats" and "Pizza: A Slice of Heaven." (The latter involved consuming 1,000 slices of pizza in one year; I wonder if I witnessed slice #1,001 at lunch?) Stage Three was seeing him on TV: he was a guest on "Molto Mario" a few times and then a judge on Iron Chef America. Stage Four was discovering his blog: Ed Levine Eats which I began commenting on. I think my commenting led Ed to me because before I knew it he'd discovered my site, became a fan, praised my controversial Le Cirque post (he called it "pitch perfect"), and invited me to "break bread." How could I refuse? Ed Levine is a New York icon.

Florent is a late-night reveler’s institution. Located in the now hip Meatpacking district, Florent has been there for decades. It opened way back in the day when the neighborhood was filled with transvestites, prostitutes, and various other nightlife characters, not models and haute savory meals. Now a destination neighborhood, Florent is still a hot spot, serving its menu of simple brasserie-styled French fare 24 hours, 7 days a week. You can feast on Boudin with caramelized onions, steak frites, eggs all the time, and fat and juicy burgers. The best part of Florent is strolling in after a long night of partying, and sitting down to a cup of coffee, a good hot meal, and a whole lot of people watching. You’ll see drag queens, truckers, supermodels, Chelsea boys, and just about every walk of life sitting side by side, smiling, and enjoying the wonderful world that is New York.
