This East Village dessertery sets the bar high. The joint that kicked off the dessert bar trend in 2003, ChikaLicious is as good as watching a friend whip up magic in her kitchen while you get to prop yourself up at the counter with a glass of sherry or a cup of chamomile. As you sit back and relax, Chika prepares your meticulous treats in the open kitchen while her husband-partner-sommelier, Don, offers the perfect accompanying wine. Rounding out the chez-amis vibe are homey details like mismatched china, jazz music, and lots of small talk and genuine smiles. For better or worse, however, the desserts are creations your friends...

I'd heard about Chikalicious, and had wanted to try it for awhile. Finally I was in the neighborhood (actually, I'm around there often), and stopped in. The place is small, pristine, with an upper middle class preppie vibe. I must say this: the service is a real class act - nice, sweet friendly people that go out of your way to make it a pleasant experience. As you probably already know, Chickalicious only serves desserts and wine (usually paired), with a prixe fixe available. So I had some. The dessert was nice, enjoyable - the port wine was terrific. The sizes...well...I had been forewarned, and the sizes were nouvelle cuisine, laughably small. And the tab came to $20 plus tip. Now, I'm famous for being a skinflint with money. I'm also more comfortable in places with a homey slightly grunge touch. I am glad to have tried the place out. It was fun., and I recommend everyone either try it once, or just stick your head in to take a look. But honestly? Once was just enough.

If you have room for dessert, Chika will whip up one of the most simple yet satisfying desserts for you at ChikaLicious, a tiny space on 10th Street. Assuming, of course, that they haven’t sold out by 11pm or you’re not waiting to be seated for more than 20 minutes.

Niche-aclious New York City Entry #98 Chikalicious / Room 4 Dessert
For the past three months I have mused on the emergence of the dessert bar. With the announcement that Sam Mason, the celebrity pastry chef at WD-50, is set to open his own aerie later this year, these sweet spots are reaching critical mass. These bars present a "tasting menu" of small desserts, supplemented with sweet or fortified wine, tea or coffee. The dessert bars are intimate (read: cramped) rooms that bow to the pressures of New York real estate. They are dominated by counters where diners watch the staff prepare the sweets, making the experience a spun-sugar equivalent to a sushi bar. Their iron pastry chefs take center stage. Both Chikalicious in the East Village and Room 4 Dessert in SoHo follow this formula.

I'm sure this blog has no more readers because of my blogging un-diligence. For the one or two of you still reading, here is another post from my week in Manhattan. NYC is full of dessert places, patisseries--overall, places that can satiate the biggest sweet tooth. ChikaLicious is a dessert bar in East Village; they serve solely desserts and have a semi-often changing menu. Julyanne, I'm sure you're cringing at the logo.

Chikalicious only serves desserts in a small tasting menu format - 3 desserts for $12. The name is not great out of context (it’s named after the chef), 3 desserts sound like too many, and how good could they be for $12? Those were the thoughts dancing around my skeptic mind but everything was put to rest immediately upon walking in.

Well you know the East Village has become more than just a destination for bars and clubs when prominent dessert chef Chika Tillman and her husband opened Chikalicious , an intimate chic dessert bar. Chikalicious is a small 20 person dessert bar and features a prix fixe 3 course dessert ‘meal’ that includes an ‘amuse’ (small sampler plate like granita or gelato), a main dessert, and petite fours for about $12. The most spectacular thing about Chikalicious is the intimacy you have with the dessert chefs. At the bar at Chikalicious, you are only inches from the 2 chefs that prepare your desserts right before your eyes. By making the kitchen accessible to the view of the customer, dessert chefs have rightly claimed their space as ‘performance based food artists’ along with bartenders, cooks, and sushi chefs. But it’s not just all show - the desserts at Chickalicious are the real deal and are quite tasty. They also serve wine at Chikalicious, so it kicks up the sophistication level a few notches higher I suppose.

Or my dorm, rather. My RA (plus another floor) set up a free meal at Chikalicious! I signed up ASAP, of course. I've never been there but have heard about it many times. Since 10 of us are going we're going to practically fill the whole place, meaning we'll get there as soon as it opens and then feast on teeny little desserts. I can't wait!

I Cheat Because I Care: Pearl Oyster Bar, (Red Bamboo), Chikalicious
Oh you dastardly website. Were it not for you, would I have said "yes" to Kirk yesterday and broken my four days of healthy, nutrtious eating to enjoy a lavish, wildly expensive and mayonaissey lobster roll at Pearl Oyster Bar?

Chickalicous is a dessert bar in the East Village. I have wanted to go since it opened. The concept of having a price fixe three course meal of desserts only is a clever idea. The desserts are paired with wines. You are given a starter to taste, the dessert that you have chosen accompanied with your glass of wine and a small plate of petit fours to complete your meal.
