A Red Hook institution for baked wonders might be far away for some New Yorkers, but now that Ikea has opened, a flock of newcomers (like me) have come to taste some sugary goodness. This bakery gets a lot of press, and from the orange front and chic interior, I can see why. But it isn’t just the lovely surroundings but the baked goods. Parking my large obtrusive U-Haul in front of the store, I climbed out to try a few of these infamous baked goods. The red velvet cupcake with cinnamon frosting topped with a red hot was by far the best thing I had there. The red velvet was deep in flavor exuding just enough chocolate. It was ultra moist...

I've fallen head over heels in love. Unfortunately, the object of my desire is in another borough. However, this elusiveness only makes me pine away all the more. Lest you start worriedly E-mailing my companion, I'll reveal that both of us are enjoying my new beloved: Baked NYC!

NYC Board of Health is setting a limit to the amount of transfats restaurant food is allowed to contain. I don't care for transfats, but I don't want someone to tell me what to do when it comes to eating. Then again, everything is complicated when it comes to food issues. For example, I'm conflicted about outlawing foie gras production. I've read that ducks and geese don't have gag reflexes, I've also heard that they do. Some of the birds (the free range ones obviously) waddle up to their feeders because they like overeating other birds are probably caged and prodded with dirty metal tubes until their livers explode with disease. I really don't know, but I'm not really into banning anything except maybe for littering and public masturbation. If I had to take a stand on the situation, I'd say that the industry has to be regulated, but at the end of the day, it's all about personal choice.

Matt Lewis is one of those cool friends that I never get to see because he’s too damn busy. Busy on book tours. Busy opening bakeries in Red Hook. Busy on vacation. I had an opportunity to go to his new bakery, Baked, in Red Hook while on a run for work. I took the F to Smith and 9th, then jumped on the B77 right across the street. It’s a couple of storefronts away from the restaurant Hope and Anchor and fills the street with sweet smells. I ordered a feta cheese and olive spread sandwich. It was simple and delicious. You can’t go wrong with warm bread from Almondine in Dumbo. For my co-workers, I brought back 3 treats. First, the peanut butter tart. The crust was shortbread, but the filling was a dream. Gooey yet light peanut butter filling topped with dark chocolate. It made Reeses look like, I don’t’ know, something that fell on the floor (something that’s not smooth). The chocolate cloud was just that. Crispy on the outside, chunky and fudgelike on the inside. And finally the spicy chocolate brownie. You don’t notice the spice at first, but then you feel the tingle in your throat after you swallow. Delish! Baked

In the Best Vanilla on Vanilla Cupcake category, the winner is: Baked! Sweet little cakes with light, downy crumb, springy yet totally tender, and just enough satin buttercream icing to grease the chute. Extra points for the springtime apropos cherry blossom motif decorating the top. Red Hook, I eat my words. I will be back to try the lemon drop cake and the chocolate malted cake, whether you like it or not.

When I think of Red Hook, I usually think of the amazing Sunny's bar and the abandoned sugar factory, old warehouses converted in to art galleries, and yummy Latin food stalls at soccer games. But now, I'll also be thinking of CUPCAKES!
