Grimaldi's Grimaldi's is known by many as the best pizza in NY. It's another one of those places that I've been planning to go to forever but haven't been motivated enough. First, it's outside of Manhattan. Second, the long line is almost more famous than their pizza. And, what if the pizza wasn't really that good? So many "best" places have disappointed me and I have little faith in popular opinion. I am happy to say that Grimaldi's was worth it. The pizza is fantastic! We ordered two large pies for four people and had no problem finishing it. The crust, sauce, and cheese are all the flavors and textures they should be, in the right...

Last weekend, the family was in town, and we took a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge. Though the day was a bit drizzly and gray, we gawked at the Statue of Liberty, picked out the Empire State Building through the fog, and experienced the Bernoulli effect. Our willingness to endure a few sprinkles was rewarded with a short line at famed Brooklyn pizza joint Grimaldi's, our final destination, nearly smack dab under the bridge. Home to a coal-fired brick pizza oven, Grimaldi's churns out the bubbling pizzas like clockwork--they need just a few minutes in the toasty oven to bake. The pizzas are all topped with fresh mozzarella, which...

Yay for a 3-day weekend! Happy Memorial Day. For our memorial day, we thought we'd take this opportunity to check out a few flavor-favorites of New Yorkers that we had not yet experienced. Specifically Grimaldi's Pizza and the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. We'd heard of these favorite flavors, somewhere in the area of the "DUMBO" part of Brooklyn we hadn't really been to yet, so we decided to check it out. Took F train to York St, walked a few blocks, East towards the water and then South past the Manhattan Bridge. Along Water Street, we stopped in at Jacques Torres Chocolate Shop, as we heard that's a place to check out. Tiny compared to...

Before my long blogging hiatus, I was documenting my gluttonous weekend in the city. One of the places I never got to visit on previous excursions was Grimaldi's Pizzeria, considered by many to be a New York institution. In fact, it's rated #1 year after year in Zagat, which, as we all know, is the pinnacle of honest reviews by completely objective third-party reviewers who have no interest in the matter whatsoever. So anyway, we take the subway out to Brooklyn, and walk a little bit to the shop under the bridge. First thing I spot is an ATM. Cash only. Very smart.

The Hungry Cabbie Eats The Outer Boroughs: Grimaldi's At Aviator
“Welcome to Brooklyn,” I said, even though we’d been in the borough for 4 hours already. A half dozen Hasidic children darted by. I saw perplexed expressions wash over my customers’ faces. We all stood there as if shell shocked, holding what remained of our Grimaldi’s slice and staring off at the desolate Floyd Bennett airfield. Countless Hasidic families roamed the grounds oblivious to the shameful pizza we’d just eaten.

Consolation Pies: Pizza Makes Defeat Go Down Easier ...
And great pizza even more so. I spent most of yesterday sitting in a dimly lit bar, waiting, with my team, to take the bocce court. We advanced through the early brackets easily—seems the mighty reputation of our crew, If You Want My Bocce, scared our first- and second-round opponents into forfeiture through no-shows. While this ensured our rolling arms didn't tire early in the day, it also meant we had no warm-up play for the later portions of the Floyd Summer Bocce Leage 2006 Playoffs.

Still considered by a lot of people as one of the best places to buy pizza in New York, Grimaldi’s has been welcoming its patrons next to the Brooklyn Bridge even before DUMBO had a name. The line stretches outside the restaurant but moves quickly. The volume inside rises when everyone’s in a good mood but you know Frank Sinatra’s playing in the background.

Grimaldi's and Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory (and a bit about sweetriot)
When is it okay to eat pizza and ice cream? If you don't care about your health, it's totally fine when it's awesome pizza and awesome ice cream (actually, if you really don't care then it's fine to eat unawesome pizza and unawesome ice cream...but that would suck). I was about to say that it's not a combination I eat much, but then I remembered that my last pizza outing to Luzzo's was accompanied by a stop at Il Laboratorio del Gelato. Now it's a theme. Crap.

Trekking through Brooklyn, searching for the perfect slice, from ethnic Midwood in central Brooklyn to Brooklyn Heights, viewing Lower Manhattan, is to be reminded of the diversity of humble pizza. Bread, tomato, and cheese - the stuff of life. It should be simple, but so many choices must be made.

Yes, We Really Ate All This Food: Family Meals at Campagnola, Grimaldi's, Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, Bar Americain, Pastis, and a return to The River Cafe
I need a glass case in my apartment with a stomach pump inside and the words "BREAK IN CASE OF PARENTAL VISITATION" printed on the outside. After leaving the car that dropped me off last night after dinner at the River Cafe, I kissed my parents goodbye, made my way into my building, rode the elevator up and sprawled out on my couch and didn't move for three hours. I was that winded. Eating is hard work!
