As anyone who has held a Manhattan office job for a significant amount of time will attest, lunch is the dreariest meal of the day. You scout your office’s immediate surroundings – I think of this as a as a circle with a five-block radius – for interesting restaurants. You have brief flirtations – with a cubano, say, or a mediocre pad thai – but it is all for naught. Everything fades into roaring mediocrity. I have been known to trudge around at noon in a state of semi-catatonia, entering a dozen shops, gazing at their dreary menus and unspecial “specials,” then stumbling out, unable to commit myself to any lunch at all. Invariably at the end of such journeys I make the worst choice – the lousy cheeseburger or the Blimpie’s sub – and kick myself over it for hours. FULL REVIEW
