"On March 15th a gunman executed a bartender and then fatally shot two unarmed auxiliary police officers before he was killed in a wild gunfight with plainclothes officers on a Greenwich Village street. Police and witnesses say 32-year-old David Garvin, strolled into DeMarco's pizzeria, ready to kill." - ABC 7 News
Some sad news today. Romero Morales, a bartender at DeMarco's Pizzeria (a kinda-sorta offshoot of legendary Di Fara) was shot and killed last night for unknown reasons by a gunman. The shooter ran from DeMarco's and was chased by two auxiliary policemen?Nicholas Pekearo and Yevgeniy Marshalik?, who were then shot and killed by the gunman. The shooter, in turn, was shot and killed by cops arriving on the scene moments later.
The New York Times says: It was unclear last night what lay behind the first shooting at the pizzeria, DeMarco’s at 146 Macdougal Street. The police said the gunman, wearing a fake beard, walked into the...

Sometimes the stories write themselves – yesterday’s visit to DeMarco’s, at the corner of W. Houston and MacDougal Sts., was one such occasion. After inspecting the exterior menu and taking a deep price-related breath, I walked in determined to order a slice or two to go. The moment I walked in, though, things changed slightly. Instead of a traditional New York pizzeria, where the oven dominates the room, the pies sit out front, and the décor is usually recycled from a 70’s fast food restaurant demolition, I was confronted by a clean, modern, if plain restaurant, with a single customer gabbing in Italian with the chef and a bored waitress slumped on the bar. This would require further investigation.

This morning I considered waking up at 6:45 AM to pick up some desserts for my mum at Financier since I'm going home tonight...and also to get myself a little brekkie. After my alarm went off, one look at my clock while staring at the surrounding dim walls (not helped by the Financial District's cubicle-filled towers and rain clouds of condensed H20 doom) told me that waking up was unfavorable. Also, I was tired. After half-consciously setting my alarm to go off in 30 minutes, I went back to sleep.

Finally made it over to De Marco's Pizza on Houston @ Macdougal, where the offspring of legendary Brooklyn pizza man Dominick De Marco of Di Fara's Pizza is baking up some very decent pies. Had a no frills traditional sausage and pepper pie, since my dearest was in need of sausage. Excellent stuff. Crust was that nice in-between state - a thin crust but with body. Sauce excellent - just like his father's. Cheese had that good gloppy texture, pooling in cheese centers rather than running all over the place. Sat at the bar, where Di Fara's daughter-in-law gave us A++ service. Great lady all the way around. She's the kind of woman you wish you had as an Aunt, or a neighbor, or even just serving you great pizza!

Eating For Two: Slice editor in chief Adam K. was originally going to grab a quick couple of slices at new Village pizzeria DeMarco's before heading home after work Tuesday night. But then the idea struck: Why not also visit Di Fara's, the inspiration for the Manhattan newcomer? And so we sampled plain slices from both pizzerias that night. The photos at left above are from DeMarco's; those at right are from Di Fara. Click the image below right for an enlarged view of the interior space of DeMarco's take-out operation.
