Sweet ItalianTurkey Sausage

Fresh Direct makes a pretty good Sweet Italian Turkey Sausage. We were both pleasantly surprised since we weren't expecting much. I prepared it with onion and peppers, served on some pita with a salad. The flavor and texture were better than other turkey sausages that Lon and I have tried before and we agreed that we would gladly eat it again. FULL REVIEW

Fresh Direct Challah

We've written about Fresh Direct breads before but we just tried the Fresh Direct frozen Challah and thought we have to give out the warning. Although the texture is quite impressive for a once frozen bread, made ready by just defrosting on your counter, there is an odd taste that makes it pretty undesirable. At $3.99 for an 11oz, there isn't even a price incentive. If you don't have a local bakery that makes a good Challah, I suggest getting Zomick's Challah which is available at several supermarkets. Fresh Dining

Fresh Direct has started a new section called Fresh Dining. It is a collection of portable meals that can be microwaved in under 4 minutes. The newest line is Presto Italiano, created by Chef Tina Bourbeau. We tried 2 flavors, the Parmesan Meatballs with Mezzi Rigatoni and Basil and the Shrimp Fettuccine with Mint, Peas, and Berkshire Bacon. I enjoyed the meatball meal more. The meatballs were tender and the sauce had a good flavor. The Shrimp meal was way too greasy and the bacon overpowered the rest of the pasta. However, the fetuccini was cooked perfectly and the rigatoni was a bit too soft. Overall, the Presto Italiano meals were... FULL REVIEW

Fresh Direct Promo: Winter Squash Ravioli

So, a few weeks ago, using one of the promotion codes I've been posting, I received a sample of the "Winter Squash Ravioli with Roasted Autumn Vegetables" and of course, as is my habit, ate it for lunch a day or so after receiving it.The vegetables cooked thoroughly but not overly much, so they still had a good crisp to them (which I prefer).  Everything was tasty though.  The ravioli was on the FULL REVIEW

As you might expect from people obsessed enough with ingredients to have a weekly column on a single vegetable, when it comes to pre-prepared meals the bar to enjoyment is set rather high. So the invitation to Fresh Direct’s launch of “Fresh Dining by Terrence Brennan” – a line of fresh food, vacuum packed for microwave dining at home -- was accepted with hearty skepticism. Tzatziki and Chicken Pitas

Condemn me if you must, but Fresh Direct's rotisserie chicken is better than any roasted chicken I can make myself; mine always comes out kind of flabby with bits that never look like they're done. At $10 it's not really an economical option, but it's worth it to me to not have to deal with a raw chicken (Todd always tells me it's not radioactive, so that gives you a picture of how I act when there's raw chicken in the kitchen). It's their raised right chickens, which don't have antibiotics (so they say; I can't say I've done a lot of research). But it's tasty, with crispy skin, lots of slightly bland but not off-putting white meat, and a little, tiny bit of dark meat (so they can't be too free-rangey, can they?). Anyway, enough apologia. It lasts us, a family of 2 1/2, three meals, so it's not that extravagant. And it was terrific in these Greek-inspired sandwiches. FULL REVIEW

Fresh Direct

We are having a dinner party on Tuesday night for 12 people, including ourselves.  Some food needs to be really fresh and other stuff I can make in advance.  I went to Fresh Direct and literally just placed 3 separate orders, one for the normal every day stuff we need, and I'm set.  I don't have to leave the house.  I don't have to schlep up and down the aisles.  I don't have to tote bags.  It is truly a beautiful thing.  Also, the quality is really good.  The 2 hour time periods they give you as options for delivery is pretty good. Nothing like something else to make my life easier... FULL REVIEW
