Yeah, I know Mario Batali worships at the altar of offal and the flappy bits of the rooster, but his tapas-style restaurant on Irving Place has some really lovely vegetable dishes, especially now that spring is on. This realization would...

Mario Batali took a lit bit of convincing to let Chef Andy Nusser open up a Spanish tapas bar under his name, but as told in Heat, a tasting knocked their socks off. Two years after they first opened, the place is still packed and the wait to sit at the bar is still long. We went out one cold night after I wrote about Barcelona with plans on eating at Bar Jamon but I’ve been there so many times that I just wanted to see how its sister restaurant compared. Without reservations, the wait for the bar was an hour. We put our names down anyway and waited in the pub down the street. One Guiness later, the maitre d’ called to seat us. We put our coats back on and ran back to the restaurant where he gave us two choices, a table that we will need to give up after an hour and a half for another couple who actually had reservations or at the bar where we can watch the chefs cook. Which do you think we chose?

I went to the Batali/Bastianich-owned Spanish tapas restaurant Casa Mono in Gramercy Park two days before I left New York, and I wish I’d had more time left to go back… and try everything on the menu — from the exotic (like Cocks Comb) to the ordinary yet different (like Cauliflower with Black Olives).

I must make a confession. I've been cheating on you with my book. Remember my book? I've been writing it. A LOT. And big things are happening with it---I'm having all sorts of food adventures that I can't tell you about---YET. Next week something huge is happening and I can't tell you about it. I'm so excited about it but I can't tell you, I simply mustn't. Ok I'll drop a hint: I'm having lunch with a food ICON. That's it, I've said enough. Please don't ask me any questions

Inbetween sniffling and other unsundry, sickly events last week, I was well-enough one night to join a few gal pals to celebrate my friend Stacie's b-day at Mario Batali's newest restaurant Casa Mono. Apparently, the name is Spanish slang for "House of Monkeys" and the food is inspired by one of Batali's favorite dining haunts in Barcelona.

With Casa Mono, a snug little restaurant on the corner of 17th and Irving Place, Mario Batali has stepped off of familar Italian earth and onto virgin territory--the land of Spain, specifically of the culinary and fashion hotbed known as Barcelona. By all means, if you have not visited, go now, and dont miss La Vigne de Senior, a charming little wine and tapas bar in the hip neighborhood known as the Borne. But back here at Casa Mono, you can get a taste of what awaits across the ocean. Here in this cozy corner restaurant, the kitchen is in the able hands of chef Andy Nusser, who was Batali’s chef de cuisine at Babbo for many years. Cooking in an open kitchen (sit up close and you may learn a thing or two), Nusser delivers a menu that excites and invigorates in its simplicity. This is food that makes you smile until your face hurts.

Last night, my family were graciously invited to be the guinea pigs for the kinks to be worked out at Casa Mono. Casa Mono is Mario Batali's newest venture. The restaurant is located on 17th and Irving. The food is Spanish tapas. The concept being that you can order a variety of tapa sized portions and pair them with different wines by the glass.
