next to casa mono (batali’s tapas place), is this tiny wine bar/tapas place. after going to casa mono almost a year ago with jen, on her ny interview circuit, i went to bar jamon with nina, on her ny interview circuit, last night. i had read about bar jamon as a tiny, better, cheaper alternative to casa mono. and i think that’s about right on all accounts. certainly the selection of food is smaller and the place is regrettably difficult for finding a stool to sit on. but when you do, the atmosphere is hip/romantic (not that we fit the bill, but it’s still fun), the food is tasty (although the quail and calamari were similarly vinegary), and the wine list is impressive (by my meager standards). the tapas run $6-13, and wines by the glass are under or around $10. a cute place to meet a friend, if you’re okay with the likely possibility of standing over a glass of wine (even at 6:30 on a tuesday evening). recommended for now, until i maybe change my mind. Jamon is Spanish for ham and Bar Jamon is the most recent translation for the New York City scene. Mario Batali’s latest digs is right next to Casa Mono, his new restaurant (and fifth in New York City). We squeezed ourselves in to eat tapas and drink Spanish wine. The space is good for ten people at most, but more than thirty are always inside, even on a Tuesday night. People are ready to jump to the next stool that frees up. A little jazz and a little Wilco were playing when we were there, but it was so faint compared to the collective noise of those who had the same idea as we did. FULL REVIEW

With Casa Mono, a snug little restaurant on the corner of 17th and Irving Place, Mario Batali has stepped off of familar Italian earth and onto virgin territory--the land of Spain, specifically of the culinary and fashion hotbed known as Barcelona. By all means, if you have not visited, go now, and dont miss La Vigne de Senior, a charming little wine and tapas bar in the hip neighborhood known as the Borne. But back here at Casa Mono, you can get a taste of what awaits across the ocean. Here in this cozy corner restaurant, the kitchen is in the able hands of chef Andy Nusser, who was Batali’s chef de cuisine at Babbo for many years. Cooking in an open kitchen (sit up close and you may learn a thing or two), Nusser delivers a menu that excites and invigorates in its simplicity. This is food that makes you smile until your face hurts. FULL REVIEW
