On Monday I went to Press Toast for a sandwich. A part of me kept going, "You want to go back to Crosby Connection! You want soft foccacia bread stuffed with stuff! You want a brownie!" But then another part of me went, "You should try something new! If you don't, you'll be doing your readers a disservice. And maybe you'll find something you like. Or maybe you'll hate it. Well. Stop talking to yourself." I had actually been to Press Toast before (they have since upgraded from a tiny hole-in-the-wall to a slightly-larger-hole-in-the-wall), but all I got was a honey and banana sandwich. Perhaps it was time for something of the non-sweet variety.

I’ve ignored a couple of previous favorite MacDougal St. eateries lately, given that Hummus Place is so astonishingly and consistently good (their latest menu addition: ShakSuka, which is described as a Mediterranean vegetable stew, but looking and tasting more like your grandmother’s stewed tomatoes, if they were served in a skillet with pita bread on the side). So, today, I went back to Kati Roll and PressToast, to see if they were still good enough to recommend.

Oh, menupages, how I love thee. While searching for pancakes in the Central Village/Noho area I came across a place called PressToast. Anything with the word “toast” in it must be good. Right? I mean, figuring it applies to the heating of slices of risen flour products and not …something else. I found out that it was right by school yet I had never noticed it before because I’ve rarely walked down MacDougal Street.
