These are not monumental events, nothing that will threaten your health or your family, but just a slew of little annoyances that continue to pile up until you're ready to throw in the towel, curl up into a ball and never get up. It's been around for years now, but the tapas trend is still going strong, since small plates mean big profits for restaurant investors. To explain the trend further, I followed the example of Jessica Hagy's Indexed and drew up this Venn diagram for you. Mercat is the latest player to enter the tapas game. Chef Jaime Reixach comes to us from Barcelona, and his American co-chefs bring Bouley, Jean-Georges, and Casa Mono experience to the kitchen. Expectations for Mercat are running high. The latest in a series of tapas joints to grace Manhattan kicked-off Tuesday evening after a number of setbacks and massive speculation (myself included). Of course I had to see this with my own eyes. Opening night and Noho's newest resident was abuzz, brimming with tapas loyalists, gourmet groupies and trendy types. Every chair was taken in the narrow 90-seat space, industrially-outfitted with unfinished wood tables, brick walls and an eating counter with a view into a white subway-tiled open kitchen: think Casa Mono meets Boqueria on a dimmer. Who better to open a Spanish tapas joint than a native Barcelonian? Owner Jaime Reixach has set out to do just that in a sleek Noho space on Bond Street, serving spanish small plates with a Catalan-bent (pasta, cod & fish stew). With the not so shabby resumes of chefs David Seigal (Bouley) & Ryan Lowder (Jean Georges), Mercat has the potential to make waves in the vogue pursuit of tapas. Don't get me wrong: Mercat's serious about its patatas bravas, hams, tortilla espanola, all-Spanish wine list and homemade sangrias. FULL REVIEW
