I am the only person in New York who hasn't been to Blue Ribbon. No, not the sushi place. And not Blue Ribbon Bakery. That doesn't count, my friends inform me. You have to eat at Blue Ribbon, the restaurant.

The Hungry Cabbie Eats The Outer Boroughs: Blue Ribbon
As a cabbie, I hear a lot of things. I hear people confess their deepest, darkest secrets. I occasionally overhear people talking about insider stock trading. And when there is an event that catches the public’s imagination or enters the city’s collective consciousness, I hear about it.

I had decided a while ago that I wouldn't post reviews of all of the restaurants I visit in NYC. But while I do like to keep this site focused on documenting my own cooking, I would be remiss if not mentioning who, what and where influences how I cook in my own kitchen.

I have very exciting news!" said my mom on the phone last week. "You're not going to believe this! Are you sitting down?" I sat down. "Not only did I get us a reservation at Peter Luger Friday night, but I got us into Il Mulino on Saturday."

Four of us went to Blue Ribbon celebrate a friend's birthday in early January. Brothers Bruce and Eric Bromberg opened Blue Ribbon on a quiet block in Soho some ten years ago and today it is as packed as it was on day one. The tiny, low-lit bistro oozes fabulousness (models, moguls, musicians are regulars) and features an eclectic menu of New York and French staples like an icy raw bar stocked with oysters, deliriously good fried chicken (served with honey), and a perfect, meaty and intensely flavored steak tartare garnished with cornichons, onion, egg, and coarse mustard. Blue Ribbon’s notoriety comes from its late-night crowd that inevitably includes super-star chefs unwinding after a night of cooking, or just a night on the town.
