Our lady in Paris (at least half the time) Dorie Greenspan posted on Serious Eats yesterday about the French seasonal cake Galette de Rois. Magically (well, not quite magically, in fact I ordered one) a Galette Dr Rois (pictured...

a fitting name for a beautiful little nook-of-a-patisserie where you just want to flit about saying, oui, j’aurais ceci et cela! even if that made no sense in french, the sentiment holds. with barely enough space to fit a line and a counter, [...]

The best Cherry Cheese Danish I have ever consumed. The best part is that the store is 10 ft from the Spring St stop on the 6. This Danish is the standard by which all other danishes now must live up to...tis the golden standard. Perfectly flaky crust and creamy perfection in the center.

I was walking rather aimlessly in Soho and I needed hot drink to warm up. This tiny French pastries locates at the east side and looks unpretentious. The Pear William Cake was too fridged~~ o_O;;; It chilled me so that even the chai latte didn't warm me up.

Looking for for the real deal on French Pastries in New York? The sign above Ceci Cela Pastries says it all - “La Patisserie des Connaiseurs”. Located literally above the 6 train spring street exit/entrance, Ceci Cela is a tiny little famous French pastries shop in Soho. Here you will find a great selection of traditional French pastries such as cakes, mousse, parfait, savories, breads, tarts, and quiches. At the rear of Ceci Cela Pastries is a cozy small seating area to devour individual treats and sip coffee, espresso, cappuccinos, late’s etc. Ceci Cela is so conveniently located of the subway stop that sometimes I forget about the back room - I used to just grab a cup of coffee and a chocolate croissant or other pastry.

Despite, or maybe, in spite of the ubiquity of Starbucks, there are a plethora of cozy cafés strewn around Manhattan and Brooklyn. I'm always on the look out for the best cafés to spend a lazy afternoon reading a good book with tea and maybe a pastry. I like my cafés to be cozy, with not too loud music. Ambience and good and reasonably price eats are my criteria.

Went to Ceci-Cela today for a light lunch before a job interview. I went to the charming little back room and ordered the croque monsieur. What I got were two slices of soft brioche that somebody had waved over the radiator for a few seconds; hiding between those was a skimpy pink paper slice of country ham. The sandwich had a rubbery ivory helmet, the top melted layer just barely clothing a rather huge lump of ice-cold shredded gruyere. This pathetic excuse for a croque monsieur sat shivering on its little plate, being mocked by the lacy paper doily it was sitting on as I wasted away, $5 later, still hungry.
