Oakland's Old Town is finally emerging as a foodie hotspot, with trendy places such as Levende East and Trappist (the Belgian beer joint) opening in the hood. But one of the early pioneers (dating back to 2005) to combine a sophisticated décor with solid food is B Restaurant and Bar. B (the initial is probably from its connection with San Francisco?s Boxed Foods Company) is a modern bar with good bones. Its décor reflects a...

Before heading off to a movie, we stopped for drinks and dinner at B Restaurant, a place with a nice atmosphere, good happy hour specials and a really terrible location for foot traffic. Their happy hour (4:30 to 7:30) seems to attract a decent crowd, at least on Friday nights, but the tables are rarely full, which is unfortunate, since they do have some decent food. Spicy Chicken Tenders $12 These were supposed to be wings, but they were out of wings, so they were tenders instead. The meat was tender and juicy, but the crust was a bit too thick. Although we are sort of lukewarm on B Restaurant, a place near our place, we decided to try it one more time because we were recommended the burger. I've got to say that it was B was better for lunch than for dinner.

We were invited to the opening party for B Restaurant, the San Fransisco outlet of an Oakland restaurant that is just around the corner from our house. Because the company who owns these restaurants is called Boxed Foods Company, we assumed this would be a casual dining type of place with salads and sandwiches and the like. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the many appetizers being passed around were well executed, very tasty and innovative. And the menu has rattlesnake on it, so we WILL be coming back for a proper dinner.
