You know a food blogger is burned out when she doesn't even write a real post about her recent trip to the French Laundry. What to say? It was enormously expensive. Almost all of the food was quite good, except for a hunk o' beef that had too much of the sous-vide thing going on (flabby, no crust). Dessert was forgettable (I can say this because I've forgotten it), and the winter squash soup was

It's like their parents just went to Hawaii... right before The French Laundry's hiatus, they throw a big party and trash the place. Thankfully, it'll be back next year better than ever, and with all-new carpets.

The French Laundry has taken on a mythical status, an impossible restaurant firmly entrenched in foodie pantheon. There may not be a more oft-mentioned destination restaurant besides El Bulli. It’s tucked away in Yountville, California, a less and less probable place for Thomas Keller’s vision - a Disneyland-type simulacrum for those following the Napa [...]

There are some things in this world best left to the imagination; people, places or events so idealized they could never live up to the expectations built up around them -- your wedding day or a mènage a trois with a pair of identical twins or, in this case, dinner at what has been referred to as the best restaurant in the world-- The French Laundry.
Ten years ago, a friend organized a

I know, I'm spoiled. It wasn't my birthday, or anniversary, or really any special occasion. Two months prior to the date of this decadent meal, I simply got a text message from my friend Lindsay: French Laundry, June 9th? To...

I hope you enjoyed yesterday's photos of The French Laundry. (And if you didn't, feel free to leave a scathing comment here.) Now it's time to get to the real meat of the meal and answer everyone's burning question: how...

Regular readers of this blog know that I am an unsurpassably gifted photographer. Unfortunately, Mr. Food Musings took all these photos. I've done my best to adjust the lighting, but short of using a flash -- which I forbade --...

I turned 29 earlier this week. Normally, I'd say I feel old, but the day before, I ended up getting carded when I bought a lottery ticket (yes, I occasionally pay the stupid tax). So, now I'm not sure how I feel about turning a year older. Apparently, my appearance is going backwards as my age continues to rise. Since I'm in my last year of my 20s, I figured I had finally reached that point where maybe I look like I am in my 20s, but apparently, I don't even look 18. Aside from that, I had a very nice birthday. I have been anticipating my birthday because back in January, Mr. Cupcake managed to get reservations for the French...

After being subjected to literally years of hype, recognition and reverence, we finally had our opportunity to eat at what some consider to be The Culinary Mecca of the Americas, and many place it in a special tier reserved for the top restaurants in the world.

Working full days with a 1.5 hour commute sure has wreaked havoc on my free time. Posts like this one seem a daunting task when I get home at 7PM and want to go to bed at like 10 or 11. But do not fret, I will do my best to catch up on my huge backlog of photos. I didn't realize it but the site has just entered its third year as of about a week or two ago. I never thought I'd still be going now when I first decided to start the site during my trip to Hokkaido in 2003, but here I am. The France posts are probably celebration enough, but at Arthur Hungry the fun never stops, so here comes another treat!

I recently invited two friends to join me for dinner at The French Laundry, the legendary Yountville institution owned by the equally legendary Chef Thomas Keller. When I sat down afterward to write my review, however, I found myself discussing not just the meal, but also my first visit to the restaurant back in 2000, the quality of the food and service over the years, and the position that The French Laundry holds vis-à-vis other restaurants in the Bay Area. The result was an enormously long post.

After the food at French Laundry, it’s hard to figure out what to eat anymore. We don’t want to cook, or go out, or do anything but go back.

It is absolutely crazy that I go to L'Arpège much more often than I do the French Laundry—was there again just last week in fact—in spite of the former being in Paris and the latter being practically in my own backyard. Planning long enough in advance to go to the French Laundry had been unattainable with my crazy schedule—you do believe me about my crazy schedule, don't you?—so it had been two years since the previous time I was there.

How do you go about describing one of the best meals of your life? By thinking back over it a couple of days later when the full weight of it has finally begun to sink in. Surprise and delight are the two main things you experience at the French Laundry and they are both slow to fade. The preparations are designed to taste good, to tantalize your senses, and not just your sense of taste but of scent and memory, and especially your sense of whimsy. Dishes are not overburdened with sauces, they are in some ways minimalist compositions, that highlight the highest quality of ingredients.
