San Francisco's SPQR

SPQR is replacing a long time favorite Chez Nous for unpretentious locally inspired Italian food, with lots of antipasti and wine to choose from. It had big shoes too fill…but with all the hype, I expected great things. Antipasti are by far the star of this restaurant choosing from cold, hot, or fried. The wild arugula salad with ricotta salata, figs and peaches was delicious and summery. The fried sardines (eaten whole) were crispy, delicate and aromatic of the sea and were served with pickled cucumbers and bean puree. The Roman republic had its ups and downs, and things at ~SPQR~ are no different. Co-executive chef Daniel Holzman is no longer with the restaurant—his official last day was January 25th. The statement from the restaurant is, “Daniel has decided to pursue other opportunities. He was a great chef and we're sad to see him go, but we wish him the best of luck.” Now, restaurants are built on relationships, and we all know relationships are very, very personal. We'd been dying to try SPQR, Nate Appleman's new restaurant. However, we are lazy and since they don't take reservations we didn't want to go all the way over there only to find out it would be a very long wait. We finally got our butts over to the neighborhood and gave it a try and were pleasantly surprised to be seated immediately, albeit in a very tiny alcove in the front window. We found the staff friendly and knowledgeable, the decor warm and inviting and the food good for sure, but not as good as A16. SPQR: A Preliminary Report

"Thank you for ensuring that I never move out of my neighborhood," I quipped to the server at A16 the last time I went for dinner. I had just found out that the A16 crew was opening a new restaurant -- SPQR -- mere blocks from my house. The restaurant opened about 10 days ago on Fillmore Street in Pacific Heights. Formerly the location for Pascal Rigo's Chez Nous, the restaurant is now sleeker, more spare, and with wine bottles climbing the high wall behind the wine bar. The restaurant's name comes from "Senatus Populusque Romanus," a Latin term which was used to refer to the Roman Republic. The initials are still found on the... FULL REVIEW

SPQR opens on Fillmore

We've been trying to get to the famed A16 for years now -- for a while I had even worked with one of the restaurants investors, and still somehow I hadn't gotten there. Well, when we heard that the same crew was taking over the old Chez Nous space on Fillmore street and opening the Roman-cuisine focussed SPQR right up the street from us, we were shamed into going.
