One of the meals I more enjoyed this summer was at 1550 Hyde, which ranks high among the Bay Area's most creatively-named restaurants: the now-defunct 500 Jackson, B44, One Market, 19 Market, 231 Ellsworth and The Richmond. It must have taken ages to come up with those names.

The restaurant is located at the top of the hill on Hyde Street, so you get an impossibly romantic view of Russian Hill, with the cable car going by every fifteen minutes. The charming server presents you with a one-page description of tonight’s wine flight, which is written in way that instantly entices and gives an education to the novice and the expert. You get a vivid description of each of the three wines (color, “notes,” and finish), as well as insider information about the region and the family of winemakers.

I've begun to notice a pattern. Sunday afternoons, especially those that suffer from inclement weather, depress me. Luckily there is an antidote: calling around at the last minute for a spontaneous dinner out.

What makes a neighborhood place a neighborhood place? My neighborhood has a lot of good and even some great restaurants but 1550 Hyde is a classic neighborhood place. Here's why I think it qualifies. It's cozy and warm and the staff greets you as if you are a local even if you're not. It's very small so service is good even when the place is packed. Perhaps most key, it's within walking distance of my house. On Russian Hill finding a parking spot can be a nightmare, but 1550 Hyde is on the cable car line making it a good pick for those looking for a place where the locals go.

Well, you know, I don't know if I could be objective about 1550 Hyde anymore. They know me by now, and treat me so well I feel like that dining room is my living room.

I rarely write about casual restaurants I visited only once, especially in my own city. I prefer to give them a few tries so I could do a fair review. 1550 Hyde is an exception, however, as I was so taken with them. I might even go back every week!
