We had a poker game after work and ordered BBQ from Big Nate's for our pre-game sustenance. I'm not sure how much each dish was, but we ended up paying $13/person and there was plenty of food leftover. BBQ Ribs, Brisket and Chicken The brisket bites were the most tender and flavorful part of the spread. The chicken was decent. The ribs were actually a bit tough. It seems that people always judge BBQ on the sauce. For us, it's all about the meat, so this was just too saucy and not tender enough. Cole Slaw Standard. We'd been wanting to try this place for a while as it seems to be the only BBQ joint in SF that delivers. It was good, but we also burped up BBQ all day long, which was...um, not so good. This place is owned by Nate Thurmond, who is, apparently, a basketball player from the 1960s. In any case, it is big, BBQ and run by Nate, so I guess it is true to its name. FULL REVIEW

An article in today’s San Francisco Chronicle reminded me that it was high time that I sing the praises of BIG NATE'S BARBEQUE. I met Nate Thurmond over ten years ago when we were both members of the same gym owned by Jim Simpson. The gym was then located in the basement of the Marine’s Memorial Building on Sutter Street at Mason. And what a great, funky place it was. FULL REVIEW

Well, I can't believe I didn't write up a review on their BBQ. I was testing out all the BBQs in SF and on the peninsula to find the best place for some yummy BBQ for my department's XMAS party. Check out December's reviews. It was such a tough task. :D FULL REVIEW

Choked, smoked, stoked

How is it that smoke can have so many identities? I find it really disgusting to smell cigarette smoke when I'm trying to eat. Thankfully, since I spend most of my time in the uber-liberal SF Bay Area, where smoking cigarettes is practically illegal and absolutely immoral, this isn't something that I have to deal with often. But on trips to Europe or Bakersfield, the odor of stinky cigs wafting into my face and sensitive little nose during meals practically puts me off travel. FULL REVIEW
