Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that a fierce ice-cream battle rages here in the Bay Area. East of the bridge, we have Ici and Sketch, while the city's Bi-Rite Creamery seems to be beating Mitchell's by a hair. Having now eaten at all four on numerous occasions, I feel wholly equipped to say that Bi-Rite's salted caramel ice cream kicks some serious ass, but is (for me anyway) only consumable very rarely. It's just too rich. Mitchell's Macapuno ice cream, on the other hand, is once I could eat once a week and be happy. On the east side, I still think Ici's ice creams are tooooo sweet, though I understand there are people...

Some say that it's a little on the pricey side, but there's no denying that Fra'Mani's cured meats are on the craveworthy list and worth every dabloon that you pay for it.

This is the second part of a two-part post about the “Bi-Rite Experience” in San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood. Yesterday I featured the Bi-Rite Creamery, and today I shop at the grocery store across the street.Walking into this neighborhood grocery store on 18th Street, you’d think the neighbors are North Beach yuppies or Marina professionals. Everything is so quaintly displayed with a mix of high sticker prices. But this is the Mission, where you can probably get a burrito for less than $5 around the corner. The Bi-Rite Market, which opened in 1998, has the charm and tight quarters of a corner grocer in New York but the gourmet look...

I’m doing a two-part post this week on the “Bi-Rite Experience” in San Francisco’s Mission District. On a block of 18th Street, it’s like Bi-Rite is taking over the neighborhood, first with its grocery store selling fresh fruits and gourmet meats and now its ice cream destination, which I’m featuring today. Come back tomorrow for a tour of the Bi-Rite Market.Artisan Ice Cream with a Fifties Flair Recently I got my cholesterol checked again because it was high last year, and now my doctor says I’m back in the normal range! So I went out to celebrate by checking out the Bi-Rite Creamery in San Francisco. ;-) Opened a year ago, the tiny...

Around 5:30 on Friday night, Jess and I poked our heads in San Francisco's Bi-Rite Creamery to scope out the flavors we planned to try after an early dinner at Delfina across the street. It had been a sunny, hot day, and as we'd walked from the BART station, I'd worked up a tiny sweat as I daydreamed about our chilly dessert plans. Fast forward 1 1/2 hours later, after our fabulous dinner (more on that later). We step out the restaurant door into a stiff breeze, cloudy sky and fog in the distance. In the time it took to enjoy some pasta and two glasses of wine, the city'd gone from a brilliant summer day to hot chocolate weather. ...

The Rite Stuff (Bi-Rite Creamery -- San Francisco, CA)
There was a time that Jon and I lived within walking distance of Delfina. Then along came Tartine. And, of course, there was always Bi-Rite market. We had a love/hate relationship with Bi-Rite. The love part was the part where I could walk there and get all sorts of pretty organic ingredients (again, I do cook at home sometimes). The hate part was the fact that their aisles are 1.5 inches wide and are filled with people, 90% of which usually seemed to be assholes. On top of that, Bi-Rite seemed to charge about 45 times as much for a peach as any other organic grocer in the city. But it was convenient for us and their staff was...

It was a day trip to Mission Dolores today. After a brief visit, my son and I walked around the neighborhood and ended up making our way over to Katz Bagels for a light lunch. On the way back to the car we parked near the Mission, we stumbled upon Bi-Rite Creamery. The place looked fairly new and modern in appearance. There were not a HUGE amount of flavors available, but still an impressive selection. I had a hard time choosing. My son didn't: chocolate. I ended up settling with the Butter Pecan in a single scoop cup. At the register, I was swayed by the delicious looking Macaroons they had so added one of those as well.
