I don’t want to sound like a broken record by heaping even more praise on Chef Dennis Leary, but damn, that man (and his assistant Luis Contreras), can cook.
We ate at Canteen last night because we wanted a sure thing. The meal HAD to be good, and there HAD to be a decent entrée for [...]

Canteen is the type of comfortable hole-in-the-walls that you’d make a regular hangout for dinner in the neighborhood. But Chef Dennis Leary (not the actor who spells Denis with one “n”) has churned out such impeccable dishes from this 20-seat restaurant that he’s made it a culinary destination. I mean, during my first visit to...

Finally, I’m feeling better. I was Bizarro-Me all week—a scary me that didn’t have any interest in food. Yikes. So what better way to celebrate my newly renewed appetite than brunch at Canteen?
I’m gonna cut to the chase here. Y’all know how I want to be Chef Leary’s love slave. You can read my original, [...]

I am back from my weeklong spring break in the SF Bay Area that consisted primarily of food and contributing my part in stimulating the economy. I will probably be posting about bay area restaurants for a while to alleviate some of my backlog. The Friday consisted of a long day of flying that included me eating a barely edible turkey & swiss in the Dallas airport, while waiting for another

Lamb Shoulder Confit with white beans, herb puree, chili flake Originally uploaded by pengrin™. Wow, what can I say about these dishes. Simply delicious! This is a restaurant that needs reservations for dinner only since the chef has fixed times to serve food. It's a pretty small place. The chef's menu changes everyday. I hear brunch you just wait in line. I found out the chef is from Rubicon and all I can remember is their amazing Pork Belly delcious - amazingly delicious and crispy. We sat promptly at 7:30 and service was friendly and attentively. We had this deliciously sweet & buttery bread. It was very good. There was...

One of the most frequently asked questions from readers is where to eat around the Curran and ACT theaters. Of course, I tick off the obvious: Cortez (always my first choice), Postrio, Grand Cafe and Ponzu for those who aren't intimidated by the neighborhood.

I’m a big NBA fan. (Stick with me here. I promise this post is about food.) I’ve watched countless basketball games on TV, and had a jim-dandy time of it. Then one day, my partner scored us courtside seats, and I had the opportunity to see the game in a whole new light: it was all sweat, muscle, and reflex. Last night, we sat courtside at Canteen. (Okay, no more crappy sports analogies after this.) I had the counter stool closest to the kitchen, where I could watch every move that Chef Dennis Leary and his assistant made. My order went in and then poof! There it was being assembled. I felt like a kid at Disneyland. Promise me, Dennis, that you’ll keep it small. I loved feeling like a conspirator. The waitresses, the chef, the two adorable guys sitting next to us at the counter—we were all in it together.

We are always in search of good brunch places without crazy lines and impossible parking. (Absinthe remains our stand-by — you’ll understand why if you’ve tried their ricotta-stuffed French toast.) We just discovered that Canteen, the much buzzed about dinner spot (Food & Wine, The San Francisco Chronicle…) long on our must-try list, pocket of a restaurant, serves breakfast throughout the week and brunch on the weekends.

Long days at the office = no time to blog. My internship ends next week, so the two-week window before school will essentially be planned around b,l,d; I trust other things will fall into place.

We had been wanting to try Canteen, a cute, yet modern super-tiny joint, for quite a while. The decor was better than the food, but the food was still quite good. The restaurant itself consists of a long, lime green bar with stools and about 4 tiny booths lining the wall. You can see everything going on in the place from every seat and the waitresses were both pleasant and laid back.

Thanks to Ali for submitting Canteen. Its been sitting in my lunch queue since summer. Whenever I go into San Francisco, I carefully pick my restaurants and have been anticipating Canteen for many months. I wondered if I had built unrealistic expectations and if the food would live up to the hype.

A tiny former diner in the semi-downtrodden TenderNob has managed to successfully merge two styles: modernism's fresh clean lines balance a campy bit of 50's nostalgia. A lime green counter runs the length of one side, and four small booths hug the other wall. Bookshelves here and there are crammed with books and give the place an erudite air. A neon arrow points to the chef at work on the line, and if you get a seat close enough you can watch him toss hot sauté pans and, occasionally, drop his tongs (five second rule!) At dinner the crowd is a comfortable, casual mix of friends, couples and solo diners.

On a dark and stormy night...ok, well, blustery anyway, we were blown in to the warm glow of Canteen, an urban-retro diner the size of a small chihuahua (postage stamp was just too obvious). Nestled in the heart of the "Tendernob" and adjacent to the Commodore Hotel ("near the Red Room!" my uber-social friend Davina exclaimed), the tiny restaurant opened earlier this year to mouthwatering reviews.

When I read about Canteen, a tiny cigar box of a restaurant in the theater district, a few months back in the San Francisco Chronicle, it was inevitable that I would fall for its charms. I'm a sucker for small, quirky restaurants with big personalities. My favorite restaurants are all tiny, usually 35 seats or less. They are places where the chef is the sole or co-proprietor, so that his/her vision and attitude are apparent in every detail, from the color of the paint on the walls to the font on the menu to the choice of butter dish.

I live in nob hill/union square/tenderloin depending on who you ask and it’s mostly known for cheap, ethnic places. Lately, there’s been a buzz building about Canteen - a small diner attached to the trendy Commodore hotel. It’s Wed evening, I’ve just spent a weekend eating through the horrors of Las Vegas, might as well give it a shot.
