Giao had a work related dinner at Circa. It was an overall tasty meal of many dishes meant for sharing. Flank Steak $21 A standard affair, but done properly. Salmon with Mashed Potatoes $17 Lackluster at best. Seared Tuna $12 A bit uninventive, but not bad. Grilled Prawns with Cous Cous $17 The prawns were flavorful, but there were not enough of them. Caprese Skewers $8.50 A playful take on the classic caprese salad, and a tasty one at that. Easy to eat and easy to share. Lobster and Truffle Mac n' Cheese $10 This is perhaps the best mac n' cheese that ever way. Totally, ridiculously decadent and truly addictive. Beef...

When my sister asked me in early January where I'd like to go for a celebratory birthday dinner, I rattled off a short list of places that I'd been wanting to try for several months. High on that list was Circa, the Marina restaurant and lounge that's located in the spot that previously housed Cosmo's Corner Grill. Not only had the restaurant been generating positive reviews and word of mouth since it opened last year, but Executive Chef Erik Hopfinger has a reputation that precedes him: he was named one of the San Francisco Chronicle's "Rising Stars" in 2002, and he earned numerous accolades during his stints at Spoon and Butterfly. Yet, what really drew me into the restaurant on that cold Sunday evening was neither the buzz nor the chef; it was a dish. And if you read my description of the dinner party that I held in my home at the end of last year, you'll probably understand why just as soon as I tell you its name: Lobster & White Truffle Mac-n-Cheese.

For Giao's office holiday dinner we went to Circa, a place partially owned by one of Giao's bosses (full disclosure). It was actually pretty good and the prices (although we didn't pay) were very reasonable. The large plates were all under $20. There were several hits and a couple of misses on the food front, but overall it was a very solid meal with good service. They even passed our water test (which is rare) with flying colors, even after we switched seats, serving Alexis still and Giao sparkling.

Circa is like a Vegas showgirl with an MBA: there's glitz, there's glamour, but there's also plenty of substance. Formerly Cozmo's Bar & Grill, this spot on the corner of Fillmore & Chestnut Streets reopened a few weeks ago, and we went in for dinner Sunday night.
