If a DJ ever asks you to help them move...JUST SAY NO! There's nothing worse than carrying crate loads after crate loads of records. So when my brother called me up asking him to help him move back to LA I really didn't know what to say. Jeni: Uhh...I don't know. I might have umm a thing to go to. Brother: Thing to go to??? Come on J. Jeni: Uhh...I might have to grade papers that weekend. Brother: I'll fly you up. Jeni: Really??? Brother: Unlimited sweets. Jeni: Book my flight. click. Last weekend while Dylan was roasting in the sun at Coachella, I worked my butt off as I help load my brother's 17 foot U-Haul with DJ junk...

Now that I am bidding adieu to the wonderful City of San Francisco, I am making it my goal to patronize all of my favorite San Francisco restaurants for "one last time." One of those restaurants on my list is Citizen Cake in Hayes Valley. Citizen Cake is the apotheosis of a "pastry chef's restaurant." In fact, that is the restaurant's slogan. The executive pastry chef of Citizen Cake, Elizabeth Faulker is one of the most renowned pastry chefs in the world. If you visit her restaurant, take a quick glance at the wall to see her "Iron Chef America" medallion hanging proudly in a frame. Given the numerous accolades and vehement praise for...

I used to live in Hayes Valley, a great little neighborhood in San Francisco. It had it all: outdoor cafes, a mom-and-pop bookstore, a wonderful Jewish deli and lots of boutiques. But my favorite place in Hayes Valley is a now-well-known restaurant called Citizen Cake. I think that Citizen Cake has always been popular, even before the restaurant's chef and owner, Elizabeth Falkner, got national attention for her deliciously avant guard cakes and cupcakes. Back in the day, I used to go for breakfast, which for me consisted usually of an almond croissant and a cup of coffee. But it wasn't just any croissant; Elizabeth's creation is almost...

OK so here I was this afternoon with some of my fave clients. Super cool, down to earth peeps. I'll plug their business somewhere else 'cuz y'all know I protect the names of the innocent. Brent & Alison. Dammit! Couldn't help myself. Anyhoo, dat's 'dem. Their business I will gladly (and only where it provides true value, my furry friends) link to them elsewhere. They have great wine buys...

Is there a better meal than Sunday brunch at a good restaurant? Oh, sure, a candlelit dinner with a loved one is nice as is a picnic in Golden Gate Park, mid-week. But what the Muse loves best is to sleep in late on Sunday, shower, put on her Sunday finest (a la casual SF) and head over to CITIZEN CAKE. The mood is relaxed, the room is light and bright and the staff is accommodating and doesn't hover. My friend S ordered just two poached eggs (not on the menu) and they delivered. Try the granola with fresh fruit and Strauss yogurt, $6.50. Then a stop next door to MAC (MODERN APPEALING CLOTHING) to check out the latest Belgium designers and to pet the puppies. You will go home with that glowing feeling inside that comes from knowing how lucky you are to live here.

Even I can suffer from food fatigue from time to time and begin to tire of trying and writing about too many new restaurants. So when looking for somewhere to review beginning with a C, I decided to return to a place I loved on our last visit, hoping to replicate the good experience a second time.

I'm on Arlequin Wine's email list, and every few months, they have an in-store tasting that piques my interest. This past weekend was a tasting of Bruno Paillard Champagnes.

The older I get, the more service seems to matter to me. I don't expect great service in a dive or a diner, though I am pleased when I get it. But in a moderate to expensive place, it really bugs me if the service is less than top notch. I do recognize that things don't always go according to plan, especially in a restaurant. People show up late, they stay at their table for ages after their check has been delivered, they show up in mobs at unexpected and inconvenient times. Any number of things can make service go from smooth to bumpy.
