I LOVE THIN CRUST PIZZA! And my lactose intolerance wasn’t enough to stop me and J. in our quest for an expertly prepared thin crust Neapolitan-style pizza.
Regulars to Pizzeria Delfina know the waits can be long. Fortunately, we were there by 12:10, and I snagged their last two top inside the restaurant.
Their menu is small, [...]

I have a dirty little secret. And no, it’s not my unnatural love for Kelly Clarkson—I’ve been out about that for ages. My confession is this: It’s been seven years since the last time I ate at Delfina. (Forgive me, Father. For I have sinned.)
Way back in 2001, I had a completely unspectacular meal at [...]

I don't know why I've waited so long to go to this place. John's been but alas, I have not. So when our friend Aarti said, hey let's do Delfina for D (she's wading through restaurants in our great city...

In the fall of 1999, I was living in a small village in northern Zimbabwe, staying with a host family that raised chickens. The chickens meant the family was wealthy (relative to its neighbors), in part because it ate meat on a regular basis. On my last night there, my host mother invited me to help her kill, pluck and cook a chicken, then served me its fried heart, lungs and liver as going away present. At the time, cutting a chicken's head off and eating its innards were above and beyond my comfort zone--I barely managed to keep it together as I downed the organs with large bites of sadza to cover...

My reasons for going to San Francisco were manifold: to see the Golden Gate bridge, to eat lots of food, and--very high on the list--to meet one of my all-time favorite food bloggers, Heidi Swanson of 101 Cookbooks. Heidi's star...

I was lucky enough to spend an extended weekend in the Bay area. The trip's activities consisted primarily of:
- eating
- drinking
- walking (thank God!)
- rolling (katamari, that is. have you seen this amazingness?)
Ah, good times indeed. My travels took me to Oakland, Berkeley, San Rafael (with a special field trip to the Skywalker Ranch), and of course, the windy city itself (San Francisco

Another one of my SF favorites. A bustling, casual Italian place with fastidious food and good ambiance. Noisy and friendly. I've had a few misses here but I'm always willing to come back for more.

We finally made it to Delfina after hearing so many positive reports. It seems to win hearts and become a favorite. We can see why it would be a comfort spot but it didn’t capture our praise. The food was good, fresh, and solid but we found nothing really special. There just didn’t seem much spark in the food. (The one real negative note was that our main courses took for-ever to come.)

So it took me forever and a day to get to Delfina, but now I understand. Amidst all the hype and frenzy for a reservation, I went in with high expectations, and left very whelmed (as opposed to under- or over-). The excellent food, great service, and nice space all contributed to a good meal.

This little restaurant packs a wonderful Italian punch. It's quite small, and notoriously difficult to get reservations for, but during the right time of year, the patio out back is a perfect place to eat, being out in the air (yet covered), and often much quieter and less hectic, not to mention more intimate, than indoors. Service, while not terribly speedy, was quite helpful and friendly. Delfina is also a restaurant which believes that a real Italian dinner should be comprised of more than just an appetizer and a main course. When they list pastas and second courses as well, they fully intend for you to get one of each, and the portions are sized appropriately. Does it mean you'll end up spending a bit more? Well, sure, but it also means you'll get to try that many more fantastic dishes, and isn't that what it's all about?

This place has such a reputation that your biggest risk in trying to eat here will be that you can't get a table, or that you will be disappointed if the food doesn't live up to the hype. If you can get beyond those two "problems," Delfina is very fine place for a meal.
