One night I was watching Gourmet’s Diary of a Foodie, one of my absolutely favorite shows right now, and their episode on South India had me grinning from ear to ear. The colors, the food, the families, the stories—just mind-blowing. As I watched one family pop messy bites of pani puri in each other’s mouths, I had an acute craving. I wanted the inimitable sensation of eating pani puri now. RIGHT NOW. I needed a fix, stat. No matter it was 1am—if Vik’s Chaat Corner in the East Bay was open, I would have schlepped across the bridge, right then. Good thing pani puri princess (i.e. moi) had plans to visit a friend for brunch at ~DOSA~ the...

I think by now all of the local papers have written up ~DOSA~. A pile of hipsters has already eaten there, three times over. Not like DOSA needs any more buzz, but since I keep getting questions about what I think about it, here's my take on this restaurant that is the current Jessica Alba of our local restaurant scene.

Don’t underestimate how hard it is to get a table at Dosa: Kathy, Neil, Cameron and I tried to walk in and eat here a couple of weeks ago, and gave up. Trying to work within the system, we gathered up 2 more friends — Dosa takes reservations for groups of 5 or more — and emailed early the next week to get a table. After 3 days without a response, I called and left voicemail. A very sweet woman called me back and apologized for the problem, and found us a table at the time we wanted.

Instead of choosing a restaurant name, I settled on an entire cuisine - from the South of India. By the end of the meal, at hot new spot in town, Dosa, I realised that the initial of the day just as aptly described Secret which is the explanation Dosa give for many of their style of South Indian recipes...

I love mango lassis. Thick and cool with the sweet tropical perfume of pureed mango and the tang of creamy yogurt. Just writing about it makes me want to drop everything and go find one. Or perhaps zip down to Farmer Joe's (my local neighborhood market) and purchase the necessary elements to make one. Hmmmmmmmmm.
