Quiet in these parts lately. I went to El Balazo this evening for a quick takeout carne asada, consumed over a Black Butte Porter at Hobson's Choice. Ordinarily I wouldn't be caught dead at Hobson's, given the number of recently-graduated Stanford Sigma Chis who hang out there six days per week. Happily, the Monday after Super Bowl Sunday seems to be a slow night for the white-hat brigade. My burrito was just ok, even after I'd asked the happy burritomaker to add extra onions and cilantro. Taqueria El Balazo

Vying with Azteca for the title of San Francisco’s Least Gloomy Taqueria, this Haight St. constant has survived years of patchouli damage with nary an ill effect. It’s our favorite among all the area El Balazos, and not just for its inviting, two-tier layout and the miniature flag on a toothpick that punctures each foiled slab. Credit cards accepted. Taqueria Balazo is smack-dab in the middle of the Upper Haight, where hippies go to celebrate their past glories, and wannabe gutterpunks from Marin spare-change the passing tourists before telling them exactly where the intersection with Ashbury is. You'll likely share your seating area a face-tattoed mohawk boy and a teenager from the Peninsula who's been shopping at X-generation down the street; give them respect, though. Balazo is the best burrito in the neighborhood, and by coming here they're showing good judgement. FULL REVIEW
