Here we have the home of the Crazy Taco and its equally freakish sibling, the Rack-Stretched Burrito. A colorful, tri-walled mural depicting major events on Mexico’s path to independence greets you upon entry; hopefully, one of the inebriates from Carlo’s Club next door doesn’t greet you with a foot to the head as you exit. Prices on the overhead menu include sales tax. Variety meats galore – buche, tripitas, you name it. Breakfast available. Open real late.

El Taco Loco is one of the Mission’s many taquerias, located right next to the 24th Street BART station. There is another location of El Taco Loco on Mission Street in the Bernal Heights area (located at 3306 Mission Street, cross: 29th St.), but it’s both inferior to the 24th St. location and less conveniently located, so we likely won’t review it here. While we wouldn’t call El Taco Loco San Francisco’s best taqueria (hopefully this will not infuriate its most loyal followers), it is certainly a solid choice, in an area that has many solid choices.

Part of an interior wall at this El Taco Loco location is given over to our favorite taqueria mural in town. It features a mustachioed, hat-clad bandit-jalapeño chasing a bespectacled, grimacing crispy taco. The renegade vegetable boasts a remarkably prominent stem and brandishes a firearm. Stone Age folk art wasn’t nearly this entertaining. Breakfast available. Open real late – 18-hour days on weeknights, 19-hour days on weekends.

Taco Loco is so close to greatness, it almost hurts me to write about it. They're like Michael Jordan before Scottie Pippen got good, or the 1926 Yankees, or the recent Brazilian World Cup Team. All of the parts necessary to really leave a mark, but...just short.
