We decided to try Farmer Brown's tonight, a soul food place with a chic, hipster-esque vibe. Despite the place being full and it being a Friday night, we were seated right away, which was nice. We'd heard they had the best fried chicken in San Francisco, and that is accurate by our account, but that's about it. The rest of the food (save the dessert) was fairly bland, although not horrible. We'd go again, but only for the fried chicken and a drink. Cornbread Mini-muffins with Maple Butter (gratuit) The cornbread was OK, but we were taken off-guard by this alarmingly sweet butter. Since we don't generally like sweets all that much...

Ate at farmerbrown last night with some friends. I gotta be honest -- I was disappointed. I did, however, like the space; it was the sort of industrial-chic you see a lot, but with a lot more warmth. I also took to the deliberate down home touches: mismatched silverware, mason jars for water glasses, and old towels for napkins (but watch out, they shed on black pants...). I'd heard that service was slow or just not tight, but ours was great, from the man who greeted us at the door (I think he might work security, ensuring none of the riff-raff from the surrounding 'hood gets in) to the host to the bartender to the server. Everyone was very efficient, friendly and laidback.

Watermelon Margaritas and Mint Juleps ($4 each during happy hour): were tossed back at at the Farmer Brown bar tonight with the newly married and shutter-happy C.

“Restaurant located in an odd location because it's in the Tenderloin area. It was packed on a Wednesday's night we had waited over an hour for our reserved table. They gave us complimentary fries for our wait. We ordered jumbo shrimp and I thought it was medicore, it needed some salt. Shrimp cocktail was medicore but if you added their hot sauce to their dish it would make it flavorful. We ordered their salad and it was tasteless. I thought their fried chicken and mac n' cheese (over cooked, pungent) was medicore also. KFC is still delicious for their fried chicken. I tried their stuffing which was surprising tasty and their Po' sandwich - very tasty & flavorful crab cakes but their cole slaw was ok. I'm still hunting for the best soul food in SF. ”

Finding ourselves without dinner plans — and seriously in need of both comfort food and cocktails — we decided to try out farmerbrown. (Or is it “farmer brown”? Even they can’t decide: it’s farmerbrown on the sign and the site, and farmer_brown on the door.)

My good friend Brian Sullivan has been busy designing and creating the very cool interior for new Soul Food restaurant, Farmer Brown. Last night Brian treated us to a very tasty dinner there. I am not going to say too much about it since Tablehopper wrote such a great review of it only yesterday and I couldn't put it into words more eloquently. It's funky, it's fun, my shrimp po-boy was very tasty, Fred's fried chicken could not have been more juicy and cocktails were totally slurpable. (Thanks Brian!)

I've lived in San Francisco since 1994 (and yes, my favorite sound system will always be the one that was at Townsend). I remember restaurants back then that used to feel authentically hip and even a touch handmade, maybe not the slickest but definitely cool and fun in their own crafty little way. Miss Pearl's Jam House was always a good time with their poolside gospel brunches (did you know Joey Altman used to cook there?). Everyone went to Firefly for a date. Lulu's was so hot. Slow Club was so cool. Ditto for Universal Café. Cypress Club was like returning to the womb—I loved getting tipsy at that bar. And no, we are not going to forget the forever-missed Flying Saucer that sadly zipped away to another galaxy. And really, would anyone ever create a bar like Noc Noc now?
