Since this week is like my Dogpatch roundup, I want to mention one more spot that cracks me up: ~HARD KNOX CAFE~. The irony is this little soul food joint is run by a Vietnamese family who lived in Texas; they've been running this cozy and down-home place for nine years. It looks like a roadhouse, with corrugated metal siding for the walls, antique signs, a wood bar and floors, cute red vinyl booths, and some bluesy tunes. It's almost always busy, with a line out the door, but it moves pretty quickly. I've tried a lot of things on the menu, but the fried chicken ($9) is where it's at. I think it's some of the better fried chicken in... FULL REVIEW

First, some news. I know this is going to make some soul food fans happy: ~HARD KNOX CAFÉ~ in Dogpatch is going to be opening a second location in the Richmond by the end of March, possibly early April! They are moving into the former Greco Romana space that sadly closed due to a fire a while ago. The menu will mostly be the same, with a few potential additions since the space will be twice as large as the current location, about 85 seats. There will be a mezzanine, and the plan is to keep the rustic roadhouse look. Their fried chicken is so good. Ditto on the spicy chicken sandwich! 2448 Clement St. at 26th Ave. Since we're talking... I love the show Check Please! Bay Area on the PBS channel up here in San Francisco. Check Please! Bay Area showcases three articulate yuppies who each voluntarily promote their favorite Bay Area eatery and critique the favorite eating establishments of the other two guests on the show. Most of the featured restaurants are high-end establishments that are out of the price range of the overwhelming majority of the populace. However, some seem like they'd be right up my penny-pinching alley. FULL REVIEW

As an Asian-American growing up in Oakland, I did not taste soul food cooking until I went to Boot Camp in Texas in the 60s, but I surely do remember my first bite of barbecued beef, sliced from the brisket, served on butcher paper, and eaten with sides of corn and macaroni and cheese. Yet Texas and Louisiana cooking is what many Bay Area residents may have grown up on before they came to California during the 40s and 50s. Yet, except for a few small cafes around African-American neighborhoods, like Emmitt Powell’s or Lois the Pie Queen’s, there weren’t many where you could sit down and have a great entree, like ox tail, pork chops, or gumbo, with two sides, like greens and red beans and rice, accompanied by cornbread and a PBR. And you would never find one where the ambience is authentic and the chef is Vietnamese-American! FULL REVIEW
