Happy hour at Hog Island Oyster Company definitely always makes me happy. $1 per raw oyster (whatever they decide to make the happy hour special) and $3.50 per beer pint is a GREAT deal. I usually get the pilsner beer on their menu. Their oysters are always fresh, and there are a variety of oysters to please any palate, whether you like them on the sweeter or saltier side. I'm an oyster shooter novice and am pretty easy to please, but I love the tasty freshness at this place! If raw oysters aren't for you, Hog Island also has other seafood specialties (although you won't get to take advantage of that happy hour special). I tried their...

We revisited the oyster bar at the Ferry Marketplace, again for lunch. This time we ordered the Clam Chowder, Oyster Stew, a dozen mixed oysters (atlantic, wellfleet, kumamoto and sweetwater) and a grilled cheese sandwich.

Some place has to be the best place for raw oysters in the city. To my tastes, the oyster bar in the Ferry Building run by the Hog Island Oyster Co. is it. I wouldn't call the space beautiful, but since one of the walls is twenty feet high, made out of glass, and looks out on the bay, it certainly is bright and cheery! There is a wrap-around marble bar with about 15 seats, some inside tables seating perhaps 12 more, and a good collection of tables outside which are really nice on a sunny day.

I lived a sheltered life before I got my sluttin' on. I grew up in a suburb of Boston, blind to anything but local delicacies. While these included great seafood, authentic Italian food and mean subs, my culinary view was pretty limited.

I am always a tad behind when it comes to experiencing anything new and exciting, usually I get around to trying it a year after it first comes out. Visiting the Ferry Building Marketplace in San Francisco was no different, except that it took me almost two years to get there after its initial opening. On my second visit, Chris and I decided to eat at Hog Island Oyster Company. After waiting in line for about 15 minutes, we got a great table by the window where we could enjoy the absolutely most perfect day ever in San Francisco (see picture - fun with Picasa 2 and although I always seem to do this right after Sam has, I swear that she just beats me to it, or how about imitation is the highest form of flattery? either way, she has been an inspiration - sheesh, I'm going to cry over here - sniff, sniff) and our Hog Island Sweetwaters, 6 raw and with a mignonette with cilantro, and 6 Oysters Beurre Blanc, clam chowder piled HIGH with probably 20 or more Manila clams, and fresh bread for the sopping (of the beurre blanc, of course, can’t waste a drop of that scrumptious stuff). We also had some wine but indulged in only a glass as we planned on going to my favorite Ferry Building destination, the Wine Bar.
