Kyo-ya keeps getting voted the best Japanese resturant in the either the Guardian or SF Weekly, and it is close to our house, so we decided to check it out. After checking in the trusty Zagat guide we discovered that Kyo-ya did, indeed, receive a good food rating. The Zagat also warned that the prices were "stratospheric". After looking at the menu, we learned that the Zagat did not lie about the prices, which were utterly ridiculous. The food was quite good on all accounts, but due to the crazy prices we would never go back here by choice. We could get the same quality at Ariake's for a quarter of the price. That being said, the service (in the form of an old, very gracious, yet high energy, Japanese lady) was great and the food interesting, traditional and fresh.

One of the best options for Japanese in SF is Kyo-ya. The place is expensive, but it continues to be one of the standard bearers for Japanese food in SF. It's extremely consistent, and you always know you'll be getting top notch ingredients - stuff like fresh wasabi and some of the best toro in town. They're also one of the few places in town that will do a kaiseki dinner, although I haven't tried one there. Here is a lunch I had recently with my dad.

Here is a lunch with my dad at Kyo-ya in SF, still a reliable (if pricey) Japanese option. Each day they have a bento box and a ko-donburi special - basically 2 entrees served together that change daily. It's always pretty good. The tai (red snapper) donburi was nice... lots of different seaweed and other stuff mixed in there too. The soba was alright. The tonkatsu was tasty and noodles were not bad.

Let's settle the great sushi debate once and for all. Every sushi aficionado I know has a favorite restaurant that they will swear up and down is the best sushi in San Francisco. Well, I have now made a study of those favorites (plus some others) over the last year or two in San Francisco and the Bay Area (see list below) and I have made a single choice to save you the trouble of asking the question, or visiting one lousy place after another.
