A long time ago, I wrote a fairly scathing review of La Fonda because, among other reasons, "...I'm always skeptical about a place that offers tofu burritos. I know it sounds hypocritical coming from a (really laid back) vegetarian, but tofu has its place and it's not in burritos." This little experiment has done nothing to refute that claim. Nonetheless, I found myself prostrate at La Fonda's counter last night, hoping beyond reason they would see fit to serve me an edible tofu burrito. I'm a little disappointed the staff didn't slay a fatted calf upon my arrival, but to their credit they put together a better-than-edible meal. It was... FULL REVIEW

With bi-level seating inside, a few tables available outside on the Irving sidewalk, and nine types of meat on the menu (none of them disgusting), La Fonda has been bringing taqueria respectability west of the Haight since its June 2005 opening. The catch? None really, unless you’re one of those picky music types who can’t bear having to hear Foreigner and Sheena Easton while you chew your food. Request a foil wrap, or be foiled yourself. La Fonda fits right in near the corner of 9th and Irving, nestled among the Starbucks, Jamba Juice, and the space formerly occupied by Noah's Bagels. Like these neighbors, La Fonda appeals to hungry passersby with an impeccably clean and cheery storefront, promising an inexpensive, yet comfortable experience. FULL REVIEW
