Monochromatic menus are something that most restaurants try to avoid, but at Mabel’s Just For You Café you get carte blanche to make your a la carte blanche breakfast with catfish and eggs ($8.95).

Just For You Café was today’s lunch stop. Chubby got in touch with his feminine side with a Cowgirl ($8.95) aka 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, and sausage. A multitude of choices are involved with this combo. He got one cornmeal and one buckwheat pancake. Both were good, but the cornmeal was the hit with its slightly gritty (in a good way) cornmeal texture and sweetness. The buckwheat flapjack had a pleasant, unanticipated lightness.

Or more precisely, Mabel's Just For You Cafe, and to be quite honest, I'd rather it was Mabel's Just for Me Cafe, so Fred and I would always be guaranteed a spot at this busy, off-the beaten track little cafe nestled in Dog Patch at the bottom of Potrero Hill. But I must confess, on Sundays when the pair of us are at our most lazy, we can only just manage to drag our arses down to Mabel's just before it closes at 3pm. By that time, the more spritely brunchtime crowds are usually thinning out and we don't have to wait a second before being seated and served.

Dogpatch. It's on the other side of Potrero Hill in the area that treads the fine line of cute/sketchy. Every time we are there, we comment about how it's just waiting to become prom queen.
