Last week's weather was so ridiculous. Freaking cold. I was rocking a babushka/homeless look at home with fingerless gloves and my blanket wrapped around my shoulders, and was ready to light a trashcan on fire in my apartment for warmth, all hobo style. There was so much rain the animals were lining up two by two (my friend strongly suggested leaving mosquitoes behind, I concur). Brrrr, cold and wet. These are the times when I want MAN FOOD. Now, the Americana cuisine at ~MAVERICK~ isn't just for dudes, but it definitely has a male POV—it's hearty, zesty, and maybe not the best food to eat every day if you want to watch your figure, but...

Ton-Ton's Journey: Vancouver 2007 will continue on Monday, November 5, 2007.)
Writing about our misadventures in Vancouver made me recall a review I've been meaning to post for the longest time. For some reason, Cat and I just don't travel well. Something invariably goes wrong.

I feel like I’m at home when I dine at Maverick. Probably because the tiny Mission restaurant is painted in the same shade of chocolate brown as my studio apartment. The restaurant’s smart color choices aside, what comes out of the kitchen is just as pleasing. Last Sunday, I had brunch at Maverick with a bunch of fellow food bloggers. We weren’t there necessarily because San Francisco Magazine readers had just voted Maverick as the No....

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Living in San Francisco ruins a girl. Dinner last night at Maverick was fine. Nice. Swell. But not much more.

What took me so long to try Maverick, the cozy American eatery in the Mission? I really can't say. But I like to give a restaurant plenty of time to sort out the kinks before giving it a try and if last week's dinner was any indication, kinks are pretty much nonexistent at this point. Everything we had was terrific and the servers were knowledgeable and welcoming.

Because of Maverick, I am starting to wish I still lived in the Mission. It opened round about the same time as the much loved (though not by me) Range, but to much less fanfare. I think that is a mistake: Maverick is small but swanky, totally unpretentious and masterfully good.

Maverick, hailed as the "best new restaurant in SF" by San Francisco Magazine, turned out to be more hit or miss than we had expected. It was good, but definately not the best new restaurant (which, in our opinion, would be Range) and probably not even in the top 5. It was small, and friendly, and it had a nice bathroom, but overall, it wasn't an incredible food experience. The whole meal, including 2 flights of wine (very good) was about $100 before tip.

Maverick’s sunny dining room is an orange oasis in the hectic hustle bustle of the Mission. I like the warm, simple design of this small, casual, restaurant. Chubby and I split a Pulled Pork Sandwich ($8.50)

I hit up Maverick on 17th and Mission last night with a few friends. Definitely an interesting spot with some good potential. It's a venture by two guys named Mike and Scott who came from Sociale on Sacramento. These are good guys, and make the restaurant a place you're rooting for.

I know this goes with out saying, but bad expensive food makes me irate! I don’t care if the restaurant is run by the most famous chef in town or if it’s as cute as a button with the top ten most beautiful people from San Francisco in it. Just give me some good food! Or at least edible food. Don’t just hire something from Fraggle Rock to run your kitchen. Please. After the dinner we just had at Maverick in the mission, I feel cheated. I feel like maybe the restaurant didn’t like me so I got served bad food. Here I am for you, darling reader, trying out unacceptable restaurants in San Francisco so you don’t have to. I bet you’re teary eyed at my altruistic manner as you are reading this.
