I stopped by the grand opening of Miette Confiserie on Saturday - a fuller report will come after a return visit, but suffice to say it's a charming and unique addition to the eclectic Hayes Valley neighborhood, and a must-visit for any lover of candy and old-fashioned stores of yesteryears.

Our friend Hugh fed us last night, a feast for kings: Prosciutto-wrapped asparagus; roast guinea hen with rutabaga, parsnip and parsley root; delicious couscous with Egyptian dukkah, all crunchy and spicy. Everything was truly to die for. But the crowning glory was the adorable little pots de crème from Miette in the Ferry Building. (Sorry, no picture!) They packed a surprisingly rich chocolatey flavor despite their relatively light color, and they were the perfect consistency. Best of all, they come in quaint little bell-shaped jars that you can reuse for pots de crème of your own, or forcing bulbs.

I was at Miette listening to a couple of people whine about the cake prices to the people behind the counter. I get irritated when losers deliver unsolicited complaints that a lovingly prepared, high quality pastry is more expensive than their Hostess cupcakes. Okay, complaining person, here's MY opinion: You don’t have to like, or appreciate, or understand those pastries. Just don’t torment the people who are offering to help you when you could just walk away. Vote with your feet. If everyone walks to Ding Dongs instead of lemon tarts, you win. But please don’t bother people who are just doing their jobs. Besides, when you were whinging, you passed up one of the best deals in the shop.
