A restaurant that wants to hold its ground in the competitive town of San Francisco needs to be something different, and Myth seems to be just that. It features eclectic French/California cuisine served in casual yet elegant surroundings. Located at 470 Pacific Avenue in San Francisco's Historic Jackson Square area, it provides a dining experience inside a landmark building constructed more than 120 years ago, and is conveniently situated next to the Financial District, North Beach and Chinatown. The landmark space has been transformed into a contemporary yet inviting space containing several dining rooms, including a special eight-person...

After being on our list of places to try for more than a year, through all the opening hype, and then the relative silence, we finally made it to Myth with Chuck and Nick for dinner earlier this month. A brief recap.
We got a wine on the sommelier’s recommendation that was far from the classic [...]

Myth, a fairly new restaurant, is turning out to be one of the harder reservations to come by in town. We'd tried to go there many times and never quite called early enough to get a reservation. For this reason, we thought that the restaurant would be stellar. It was not. It did have it's good points (the super-fresh scallops) but it also had too many bad points (mediocre entrees, hit or miss soup). Now that we've eaten there we are thinking the reservation thing has much more to do with the atmosphere and decor than the food itself. Here are a couple of things that they did have going for them, other than the food:

Our studly single friend (Ladies!) Loren introduced us to this place. The decor is very cool and the food is very good. We were able to get a last minute resie which is not the norm. This place packs them IN. A great bar you can eat at but the dining room is rockin, open kitchen and comfy sofa like seats. Good for unbuttoning the trou at the end of the meal and swiggin' down some porto.

One place that I wanted to make a return trip to was Myth. I was pretty happy with it my first time there, back before it got written up in the Chron. It's become really hot now, and its popularity was evidenced by the packed house on my second trip there (this time with my mom). I still think it's one of the coolest dining rooms in the city - very relaxed, modern, and open. I guess the question is whether Myth can keep its standards high when it's drawing huge crowds every night...

Partitions and built-in booths smartly separate entryway, bar and several dining areas to create a space that's cozy enough for comfort and roomy enough to let loose. Fabric panels that hang from the ceiling create an intimate effect, and the open kitchen is in plain sight for the curious (who, me?)

No, I'm not dead, just busy. Sorry to disappoint."New York?" "No." "Boston?" "No." "Definitely NOT LA..." "Hell NO!" Thus went our recent opening conversation when we dined at Myth. The hip, but comfortable dining room reminded us of somewhere other than SF, but we couldn't place where. We ultimately agreed that it had a New York vibe, without the jagged New York edge. It's like a comfy NYC.

My dad really beat the rush in spotting Myth, the new restaurant featuring Sean O'Brien, former sous-chef of Gary Danko. It occupies the space that was formerly MC Squared, and is just a minute from the apartment. We went just after the new year, and the place was still quite empty and quiet. The space is absolutely gorgeous - clean, modern, refined, and comfortable, all without being at all tacky or cold. I personally thought that MC Square's design was very cool, but many people thought it felt a bit soul-less. Myth certainly isn't guilty of the same. To be honest, I think Myth has one of the nicest designs of any restaurant I can remember going to for a long time. The aesthetic is at once simple and beautiful. There's also a nice bar at the entrance that seems like a great place to get a drink.

After reading this glowing review of new San Francisco restaurant Myth on Alder's Wine blog, I put it close to the top of my list of places to try.

In trying to gauge my own reaction to the recently opened Myth, I recall my first experience of Restaurant LuLu nearly 10 years ago. At the time, this recently opened restaurant seemed, well… effortless. It knew what it wanted to be and managed to nail it perfectly, crafting an atmosphere, a menu, a wine list, and an overall experience that were its own, and both confidently and pleasingly so. This is not to say it achieved anything close to “perfection” (whatever that meant to my culinary sense then or now) but merely that it was the right thing, in the right place, at the right time – a complete package of cuisine and aesthetic that I found myself more than a little in love with.
