Spicy Lamb Flatbread, Red Onions, Sumac and Pinenuts
One of my all-time-favorite movies is My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I loved when the crazy aunt with the absorbed twin would hoist her shot glass, shout "OPA!" and slam back the ouzo. I want to be doing that at her age! I wanted to do it last week after my first visit to Nopa. I wanted to stand up and cheer, clap and shout "OPA!" I'd heard the

Crack smoking epidemic dulls San Francisco’s taste buds (Or, a cranky review of NOPA)
**WARNING: If you’re a fan of NOPA, you’re going to hate me. And I’m okay with that.** Restaurant reviewers of San Francisco: Lay down your pipes. That shit is affecting your judgement. Or so it would seem. Dinner last night at NOPA was a huge disappointment. Not that it was really bad. It just wasn’t particularly good. But I’m getting ahead of myself here.

So we came here the other night with our rock-n-roll friends Dave & Shari. Located at Hayes & Divisadero in the not-quite Hayes Valley, not quite Panhandle area of SF. So I guess it is North of the Panhandle. Hence the name. Doi.

Nopa has become too popular for its own good Even during typically slow restaurant hours, the place is 3 deep at the bar. Chubby and I came in for cheeseburgers ($13.50).

It was our good friend Kelly's birthday so we all went out to Nopa, a restaurant that we had never heard of before, but that was obviously very popular. We had a reservation for 9pm, and the didn't seat us until almost 10pm, which was totally unacceptable. Unfortunately, no matter how good the service is after that, it can't really bounce back. The whole point of having a reservation is that you don't have to wait. So, Nopa totally failed on that count. Once we were finally seated, the service was fine and the food came out quickly, which was good since we were SO hungry at that point.

I love that Barry Manilow! But he has nothing to do with Nopa, so let's move on. Last Monday night, I was -- yet again -- not in the mood to cook. Mr. Food Musings has a lot more stamina than he used to (did I mention he's gone back to work part-time?) and so he was up for a mini adventure. We mentally scrolled through the new places that had opened and decided on Nopa, a Cal-Med small plates place. I know, yawn, right? Uh-uh. We were in the mood for some of that kind of lovin', and besides it was close to home. Could they take us in 20 minutes? Yes, if we didn't mind sitting at the bar overlooking the open kitchen. Sold.

Shall we talk about all the three- and four-letter word places opening of late? (None of them profane, mind you.) There's SEBO, and BOCA, and CAV, and Coi, and DOSA. And lest we forget, ~NOPA~. I eagerly anticipated the opening of this joint from the moment I heard about it. From the lines and the hype, I'd say the rest of the city did too. The Western Addition/Lower Haight/NoPa area needed a chic place to get a DRANK that doesn't stink of beer and isn't full of USF students drinking said beer. We (yes, we—this is my 'hood) needed a hotspot to get a meal with friends beyond the few semi-hip eateries here: Tsunami sushi and Little Star Pizza. Uh, Popeye's, no. No comment on Blue Jay Café. And late night? Forget it. Try a candy bar at the corner store, or delivery. NOPA is open until 1am, how outstanding is that?

Do you know someone who has "good ordering karma"? Whenever you go out to eat they unwittingly order the best thing on the menu and you're left with something decidedly less interesting. I'll tell you, I don't have it. It's rare that I end up with the tastiest thing at the table. Frankly, ordering off a menu is more of an ordeal than it ought to be for me. First off, I usually want to try several things and then get anxious over my choice once I make one.

The newest restaurant in the district just north of the Panhandle (NOPA) opened eight days ago. We went to the corner of Hayes and Divisadero to test it out. Three of us waited at the bar for a table that wasn't in direct sunlight--the restaurant's giant windows don't have coverings yet, so many guests were seated and dining with sunglasses on. The cocktails are good and inexpensive; I had an elderflower lemon drop (minus the sugar rim), that didn't really taste either like elderflower or lemon, but it was delicious and refreshing. Dangerously drinkable. My future roommate had a tall mojito (that's the drink she measures all bars' measure by--boring, and bartender-unfriendly, but a good standard. If a bar's got a good mojito, it's not going to suck), and Valentino had a lemon-soda with Hendricks.
