Last night, we walked down the street to Ozumo which was recommended to me as the best sushi in SF. Emily pointed out the minute we walked in that what she had read (all over Gridskipper, Eater and other sites)...

We went to Ozumo, a chi-chi sushi place that is too expensive for what it is, for a friend of Giao's birthday. We're not really sure how much it cost, since we left before the bill came, and thus we probably paid too much. Assorted Sushi Fresh fish, good uni. Assorted Sushi Decent. Shrimp Tempura Roll A bit bland. Assorted Sashimi Fresh. Black Cod Very tender, cooked perfectly. The standout of the night. Sushi Roll Pretty, if a bit slimy in texture. Sushi Roll Not particularly memorable. Edamame Perfectly warm and perfectly salted. Avacado and Sashimi Salad This needed more texture contrast, but the flavors were nice. ...

Giao had lunch with one of our bosses as Ozumo, a highly overrated and very expensive sushi place in downtown SF. We are not really sure why the people we work with beleive this place to be the epitome of sushi. It is chi-chi for sure, but the sushi is just average.

And with that, my friend realized we should not have gone to a sushi restaurant to eat. Two days after a meal at my favorite Sawa, I found myself in Ozumo staring at it all in disbelief - the carefully calculated atmosphere, the the yuppie set posing for attention, and tattoe-d hipster girls selling it all. I knew better than to drag someone else to a sushi place (they don’t want to hear me complain), but it was nearby and time was running out for a meal.

This is a VERY COOL Japanese place, but not too over the top from a decor perspective. It's a big spot, we're kinda surprised they haven't had to scale back a bit, but it's a testament to both their great food, atmosphere and location on the Steuart Street Restaurant Row. The front room is the bar area, the back is a large, open restaurant, sushi bar and robata grill (for small plates). Full menu both places, and the food is top-notch.
