Michael Bauer, food critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, continues his Pizza Friday series on his blog Between Meals with a trip to Pauline's in San Francisco. Pauline's makes California-style pizza: Bauer says: The dough is made with whole milk, olive oil and sea salt, producing a crust that is miraculously both chewy and crisp. The pesto pizza is the must-order topping; for many, it's better than tomato. Garlic lovers swear by the garlic pizza with fontina cheese, and I love the more traditional Italian combination with salami, Italian sausage, mushrooms and green onions. The small, lighted sign for Pauline’s Pizza looks like something you’d find outside of an East Coast pizzeria, circa 1979. Barely noticeable on this rather derelict block (there is a used-car lot across the street and the old Levi-Strauss building next door), the nondescript storefront belies the warm, homey atmosphere of a truly unique, and distinctly Californian, pizza restaurant. I return time and again for the feel-good atmosphere, the locally grown, organic ingredients, and the perfectly blistered, thin-crust pizzas. FULL REVIEW

It's not that often that I go out to dinner and come home with an organic, heirloom eggplant. It seems the folks at Pauline's Pizza have a glut of eggplants from their Berkeley garden, and they're literally giving them away! (They're also roasting them and pairing them with salami and provolone cheese on top of pizza.) FULL REVIEW

J and I often having a hard time deciding on somewhere to eat during the week. He tends to like something that is fast, "not drama", and somewhere that we know. I am usually a bit more adventurous -- I think it stems from the fact that he spends his day working at a mega-company with thousands of people, and I work at my teeny tiny studio apartment. We definitely have places we love to go -- noodle houses, sushi, random neighborhood joints -- but I think that we have both been kind of ready for some changes to our regular places. We finally found a new restaurant worthy of making it into the regular repertoire. FULL REVIEW
