Classic and Comfortable A couple of weeks ago I realised I was tired. Tired of trying new restaurants. Tired of places that don't know how to treat their customers. Tired of seeing and being seen. Tired of the constant din of the Ohmygods whose nasal shrieks and incessant squawking seem to be unavoidable at every hot spot in town. I was tired of noise. I just wanted to sit down and have a quiet, tasty dinner, a nice glass of wine and an audible conversation with a couple of my friends. Thankfully such places aren't impossible to find. And one of them is Piperade. Piperade is only a stone's throw away from both North Beach and The...

Piperade is a great Basque place that far outshines its sister restaurant, Bocadillos. Giao went out for a work lunch here (and didn't pay, so we don't know the prices) while Alexis ate catered in food from Brandy Ho's (Alexis ordered the same thing as last time).

When I told friends that I would be reviewing Piperade for Check, Please!, the unanimous response I got was, “I love that place. I want to go.” I made reservations and turned it into a thank you dinner for a friend. I love taking new people to Piperade. You feel the personality and genuineness of chef/owner Gerald Hirigoyen in every touch. The room always makes people smile. Our expectations were high because we have had several wonderful experiences in the past. I am happy to report all expectations were met and exceeded!

I’ve been to Piperade exactly once so far. It was just over a week ago with my sister, husband, and in-laws. We had a great meal and I already find myself recommending it to friends. I really ought to go back and validate this suggestion before posting, but with our schedule already quite full in the coming weeks, here are some notes on our first visit for those interested now.

At long last, my final SF post from before my trip to France. This is a nice lunch from Piperade (older visit here) with my mom. Somehow, my mom never tried Piperade even though it's just down the street. I think it's the best restaurant in the immediate area. I still have memories of that foie gras/calamari dish - it was one of the most memorable things I ate last year. This time, since I was with my mom, I didn't want to have to finish one of the huge main dishes by myself, so we went with just stuff from the small plate section.

Piperade feels a bit like a somewhat modernized slice of the Basque country, with lots of exposed wood, a very homey earthy atmosphere, and even a large "Sheepherder's table" in the middle with a sculpture of wine bottles above it for big parties or those who like meeting new folks over dinner. The food was good enough the last time to merit a return, and this was it.

This is Piperade, a fairly new Basque place literally 3 blocks from my building in SF. Keith was in town for a couple of days between coming back from the Philippines and going back to school, so he came along with my dad and I for lunch. I got really excited about the place after seeing rave reviews for it just about everywhere, and especially after reading about Anthony Bourdain's experiences in San Sebastian in his book A Cook's Tour. That really gave me a craving for some Basque food. Piperade did not disappoint.

On Saturday I went to Piperade with some friends. And I must say- it was quite nice. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. Great food and great wine.

I’ve now been to Piperade four times – thrice for dinner, once for lunch – and it is definitely one of my favorite recent additions to the restaurant scene in San Francisco. Located incongruously in "ad agency alley," the heart of manufactured image and soundbytes, Piperade consistently delivers some of the most authentically innovative and genuinely focused flavors that I have had the pleasure of eating in the last couple of years. Of course, I don’t often get to eat Basque food, so it may be that the North of Spain is semi-secret culinary paradise that we’re all missing out on, but regardless, we have Chef Gerald Hirigoyen to thank for bringing it home to San Francisco.

This Basque restaurant really suprised me with its quality/price ratio! Going there, I expected in advance that the food would be good, but to come away having only racked up a $400 bill for 7 people, including 2 bottles of wine and a 25% tip, seemed reasonably extraordinary to me given how good it was. (The chef also gave us a free round of drinks at the beginning as a table wasn't ready until 15 minutes or so after our reservation, which was quite nice.)

Another dinner at Piperade last night. I wasn't too happy the last time I was there with Malik, Dave, Allison, and a few others. I was in the mood for something French while shopping at the new SOMA REI, so I decided to give them another chance.
