Plouf!

In addition to a food review, you also get to learn a new French word today - plouf! It means "splash" in French, or according to the website's more eloquent definition, "the sound a stone makes when it drops into a French stream." Try saying the word aloud. Really does sound like a stone splashing into water, doesn't it? Ah, the French language is wonderful ... which is how I got seduced into studying it for five years, I suppose. Plouf is the name of a trendy seafood bistro on Belden Lane, tucked in between all the other little restaurants on that bustling street. Quite fantastic, isn't it? Even if the food were horrible, dining in this discreet San Francisco alley would be more than tolerable. Home to a handful of Europe-centric restaurants (Italian, French, Spanish), Belden Alley brings a smile to my face as soon as I turn into it from Bush Street. FULL REVIEW

Thank God for French Independence

I'm going to interrupt my Los Angeles posts, since Bastille Day, my favorite of all holidays, came along. Fine, perhaps not my favorite per se, but it's a good excuse for hedonism--not that anyone ever really needs an excuse. Though I had to go to work, a leisurely 2-hour lunch in Belden Alley provided a good escape from the office. FULL REVIEW

Plouf is one of the restaurants on Belden Lane, a little alley that has a European feel to it, as the all the restaurants have tables that spill out on the street, filling it up with patrons and hosts hawking their seats. Unfortunately this makes for a hurried staff, but is made up with by the bustling environment and great people watching. FULL REVIEW

Plouf's New Menu

Last night I dined at Plouf where we eat regularly. The specials sounded so good, I chose them over regular favourites from the menu. I started with a lobster bisque. The soup was delicious but it didn't taste of lobster. It had a rich taste even though it wasn't a creamy soup. I puzzled over every spoonful but I couldn't work out the ingredients of what I was eating. FULL REVIEW
