My first visit to Range was back—when was it, a year ago?—when San Francisco’s inaugural Michelin Stars were finally dolled out. In fact, we dined there on the very same day that Range earned its star. And I remember thinking, “Really? This place earned a star over all the other mid-level restaurants in this city?” [...]

The latest gem I've discovered in the Mission District - Range, a restaurant where you can enjoy great California-style cuisine at reasonable prices in a sophisticated yet unfussy setting. It's easy to pass right by Range and not even notice it, because its exterior is very simple and not glamorous at all (one of my friends even said its sign was too small). The interior, although simple as well, emanates sophistication without overdoing it. A subtle industrial theme runs throughout the restaurant, from the concrete bar to the metal lights to the aluminum-like tables. The industrial elements give the space enough quirkiness to make it...

During a recent hunt for Sunday dinner in the Mission district, several new places I wanted to try were closed. That’s when I was drawn to the warm glow of Range. Range isn’t that new, having opened in 2005 by the husband-and-wife team of Phil and Cameron West. (He from the kitchen of Bacar and she from the front of Delfina.)...

We went back to Range, our winner for best newcomer of 2006. It was still very good, but not quite as good as we remembered. Last time we had 100% hits, this time there were a couple misses. Watercress Soup $7 Served with sour cream and breadcrumbs, this soup was sublime. Very smooth and incredibly flavorful. Hamachi with Shaved Fennel and Sea Salt $12 Although the fish was fresh, there just wasn't a whole lot going on with this dish flavor-wise. Little Gem Lettuce Salad with Fried Capers and Radishes $8.50 A salad is a salad, but the fried capers were a really inspired touch. Ribs $13 These ribs were fall off the bone tender. ...

I've followed with as much interest as anyone the drama and intrigue around the recent assignment of Michelin guide stars to Bay Area restaurants. I was unsurprised by many of them, but was pleased to see Range receive one star. Frankly, I didn't expect any Mission restaurants to receive that degree of attention.

We started out the weekend at one of our favorite restaurants: Range. We’ve been coming here since soon after they first opened, and we — along with half of San Francisco — immediately fell in love with the coffee-rubbed pork shoulder served with creamed hominy. Then we dug deeper into the menu and found plenty of other strengths: a rotating sashimi/crudo selection, various riffs on pasta appetizers, and a bavette so good that I don’t even mind that it comes pre-sliced. (No need to comment: I know it’s supposed to be like that!)

Typically, I think ordering chicken at a nice restaurant is for fools. It's the equivalent of joining a fancy gym just so you can shower there. You can shower at home just the same and not pay the premium. Not that I don't ever order chicken at taquerias, Chinese restaurants and similar other low-cost establishments. It's just that I'm typically not going to sit down to a nice meal, look at an attractive menu selection, and then blow $20 on chicken. It's just not an option. That said, there are a couple notable exceptions in San Francisco - restaurants that truly make Destination Chicken. Here's my very short list: 1. The whiskey...

Range had been on our list of restaurants to try for months, but it is hard to get a late notice reservation and we never seemed to remember to get a reservation when we were going to be in the area. Alexis' parents were in town, so we thought it was a good excuse to make a reservation in advance and give Range a try. We were not disappointed. In fact, this was one of the best meals we've had in a long time. Every dish was a standout. And for the quality of the food, it was not expensive at all.

If orange is the new black, then small is the new big when it comes to San Francisco restaurants. Over the last 12 months, San Francisco has see a steady number of restaurant openings, the majority of which, much to my great satisfaction, are small operations that are bringing a wonderful variety of styles and charm to the San Francisco dining scene.

I would be remiss to make a first real post on this blog and not make it about one of my two favorite restaurants - Range or Street. There's better-this-or-that out there on the landscape, but I truly believe that these two restaurants capture the regular, day-to-day needs of the San Francisco diner better than any others. With Range, all discussions start with the food. It's always amazing and very creative. What I like particularly about their creativity is that it's not misguided. Often you go into a restaurant and their "creative" menu offers oyster and beet roulade on a bed of flan, or vodka and chocolate-infused martini with a...

I finally got to eat there. They weren't as packed as Bar Tartine. Hostess were really nice when we got in. We were seated promptly without any reservations on a Friday's nite. Surprisingly! Their menu changes everyday from my understanding but there are some dishes that are their staple foods.

Well, we probably won’t be calling this Range ‘home’ anytime soon…this fairly new place in the Mission, is up against a lotta local contenders – Delfina, Luna Park, Limon, etc.

Although I don't envision "In Praise of Sardines" as a restaurant review blog, per se, from time to time I can't help but shout the praises of restaurants I've visited that I particularly liked. This past week I went to a pair of restaurants in San Francisco's Mission District that I feel are especially worthy of a mention.

Sleek, modern space where you scream for your supper
Because we had read some great things about a new restaurant called Range, in San Francisco's Mission district and because we'd heard the menu would be seasonal, which we thought would fit in quite well with our efforts to eat local, we decided to check it out, with two friends, last Friday.
