I hope there's no connection to yesterday's post , but I just got word that Scott Howard, one of last year's Top 100 restaurants, isn't going to reopen after all, something I reported a few weeks...

Whoa. Big major bummer here: this remains officially unconfirmed, but I heard from a couple folks ~SCOTT HOWARD RESTAURANT~ has closed. Thud. Damn. Howard was reportedly personally calling all the employees yesterday to tell them the unfortunate news that they wouldn’t be open today. I didn’t get an email back to confirm the sad what and why, but I do know business in January has been rough for some places around town… Will let you know next week once I hear back from him. I know a lot of local people are really sorry to hear it didn’t work out—so many folks love his cooking, and have a lot of respect for him. Best to you, Scott, thanks...

A Favourite Discovery of 2007 After initially being compelled to dine there against my will by some pals who hijacked my birthday plans this past June, a date which is now marked in my diary as a blissful blur of pork belly, beef cheeks, scallops and Brachetto, Scott Howard has fast become one of my favourite restaurants in San Francisco. I love the acute sense of transition I feel as I escape the busy sidewalks of lower North Beach, slipping past the heavy drapes at its doorway and crossing the threshold between outside and in. My eyes quickly adjust to the dark wood decor, the warmth of which is reflected by the always-genial...

We headed to Scott Howard, one of our favorite places, and one that we hadn't been back to for a while for some reason. It was easy enough to get a reservation on a Friday night, which wasn't a particularly good sign. When we got there we found that they had completely revamped their menu. Previously, we had really loved the tasting menus at Scott Howard, and we found that they were completely missing from the new menu. The new menu was much more standard in form, with several appetizers, mains and side dishes, as well as a single prix-fixe meal. We were happy to find that the food was still tasty, but it is always a little...

This event feels almost custom-made for me: Jerry Horn, AKA Dr. Champagne of Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant (he just wrote this wino piece last week on corkage) is hosting a ~CHAMPAGNE FEAST AT SCOTT HOWARD~ for 25 guests. The dinner includes five courses of Scott’s fully loaded cuisine, paired up with five fab Frenchie shampoos. There are about ten spaces left (which are rapidly filling up) so I’d reserve a spot sooner rather than later. Here’s the deeeelish menu: Course One: Trio of Fish: Ahi Tartare–scallions, avocado; Hamachi Crudo–pickled cucumber, curried mayonnaise, ponzu, herbs; Smoked Trout–truffled egg salad, crostini, herbs,...

Tonight was Dining Out For Life, and since I had blogged about it and encouraged everyone to eat out during this special evening, I thought I had to be the man of my words and do the same. So I called my friend David and we made plans to go to one of the participating restaurants. We selected the 19-month-old Scott Howard in the Financial District/North Beach area. Scott Howard, simply enough, is named after the chef/owner Scott...

Your first impression is of the cool and vaguely aggressive entrance, an alcove inset into the wall with a massive, dark wood door set at an angle. It's reasonably unique, and certainly a striking first impression. Beyond the door, you walk through a nice equally dark buffer curtain into a warm yet modern atmosphere of hardwood floors, dark wood chairs, and various shades of brown and tan throughout the walls and beamed ceiling. A dark bar lit by old-fashioned large filament bulbs dominates the left end of the space, and the dining area is sunken to the right. It's an intense yet classy space.

There is strange mojo around restaurants—sometimes things can't be totally explained. Like why do people continue to line up for an hour to eat at places that you can’t pay me to dine at? (e.g. Nan King, Puerto Alegre. Unless you're 22 and just don’t know better, why would anyone persist to eat in those joints, let alone line up for them?) And then you have total gems, like ~SCOTT HOWARD~, that just don't seem to get all the traction they should. Because I'll tell ya, this man can cook.

We went back to Scott Howard, one of our new favorites in SF, for a nice Friday night dinner. We didn't have a reservation, but they easily accomodated us at a table in the lounge area with access to the full menu. We had previously ordered the 7 course tasting menu and were hoping that it had changed so that we could order it again, but when we looked at the menu, it was still essentially the same. However, the waitress asked the chef if he would be willing to mix it up a bit for us and he graciously obliged with the following, once again fabulous meal ($80/person):

Chef and restaurant Scott Howard have taken over a location on the edge of the financial district that began as the Cypress Club, an over-the-top 1990's glittery copper and tile studded nightclub that was all flash. Fortunately the focus has flipped to the food rather than the now restrained interior.

We decided to try this new restaurant--scott howard-- for dinner after an evening of poker. The meal was delicious; surprisingly so. The 7 course tasting menu, as seen below, was $80 per person.
