It doesn't matter what time I head to Tartine Bakery in the Mission District there is always a line. And every time I go, I get bakery-struck and I get completely nervous. I stand in line peeking and hoping our favorite tarts aren't sold out. I memorize my order. Repeating it to myself over and over. And once it's my turn I recite my order like a 12-year-old-girl asking a boy to the dance. "Hi. Ummmmm...can I get a gougère, a banana cream pie and one...NO...I mean TWO friands...and a latte...to go..no I mean for here. Please. Please." For some reason Tartine always seems chaotic to me and I really don't do well in chaos. Just ask...

I'm still shocked that it took me four stinkin' months to finish my posts on Vietnam. Too many streetaurants, too many pictures, too many stories. It was just all overwhelming. Anyways, to make things even more overwhelming, this year I'm teaching a new grade..2nd grade. I've been busy getting used to the new curriculum and standards...but overall I'd teach 2nd grade over whiny Kindergarteners ANY DAY. It's nice to be teaching curriculum versus teaching a kid how to sit down without licking other kids. Kinder kids are nuts. But my 2nd graders, they're so sweet. It's been a long time since I've had a class that I truly enjoyed...

Baked Goods Tartine Bakery - Kristine recommended this great French Bakery Tartine Barkery. Lon had a good Buttermilk Scone with Currants and I tried their famous Morning Bun with Cinnamon and Orange. It's like a cinnamon bun in a way, but not as ooey and gooey. The dough is layered with more of a croissant texture and it has a hint of orange. They certainly deserve to be famous for it--it is delicious and definitely unique (hence my poor description). Lon didn't like their utter lack of service: customers get their own water and coffee and bus the tables. But hey, then you don't have to tip. The prices at Tartine are on par with...

I found heaven this past weekend at Tartine, a cute little neighborhood bakery and coffee shop in SF owned by a married baker couple (how romantic, I know). The shop is simple and small with a sort of French feel.

If I thought more people knew the song, I would write this post to the tune of Dolly Pardon's "Jolene." It would go: Tartine...tartine...tartine...tartine...I'm begging of you please don't take away my tart. (If you don't know the song, I...

After being inspired by the "Single Guy Chef's" recent visit, I decided to pay a visit to the famed Tartine Bakery, located in the artsy-fartsy and culinarily gifted Mission District of San Francisco. The usual line snaking out the door of Tartine moved relatively quickly because I randomly struck up a conversation with a customer behind me. The customer informed me that Tartine Bakery was "dubbed the best bakery in the United States by the New York Times" and I would be in for a "real" treat. He proceeded to launch into an arousing speech about Tartine's pastries--his glowing speech was worthy of a standing ovation. As I listened to...

I'm surprised that while I was living in San Francisco, I never went to the Tartine Bakery. I guess maybe it was because it's on Guerrero Street, which to me is like in between the Mission and Castro and no where near the bus line. But when I saw the beautiful cookbook that came out around Christmastime, my interest was piqued to find out what this bakery had to offer. So this past Saturday, I went over to the Mission to visit this popular bakery. I arrived to see a line snaking out around the entrance of the tiny bakery. OK, really. Do I have to stand in line for just a slice of passion fruit lime bavarian cake!? Since I didn't have...

TB is an affliction that can take years off your life. T.B. is also an affliction that can put inches on your midsection. Weekends at Tartine Bakery are a mob scene. I had been hearing raves about their bread pudding which they make with brioche. This pretty, currant and apple adorned comfort food wasn’t my thing. I liked that it was served warm and wasn’t too sweet but it was a little to soft and eggy for my taste.

Today must be my lucky day to score parking in the Mission District right across the street from Tartine Bakery. This was a first time visit for me and I must be blind but I dont see any signs stating the name of the bakery anywhere on the outside? For late afternoon, there were a lot of people inside and not sure how the seating works. Some of the tables had letters on them and not sure if they were for reservations? Ordering is done with pastries and desserts on the left side and coffees and whatevers on the right side.

Sorry for the lack of updates--it's only been the first week of school but I've been busy dealing with my schedule. The very temporarily springlike weather has now passed so snow has fallen once again. I still have a huge backlog of winter break eats though. One place that I frequented (too) often was Tartine Bakery. I think I must have gone at least four times a week for coffee and pastries.

After 5 1/2 hours in the car and several fast food pitstops (blech!), we were starving for some real food by the time we arrived in San Francisco.

It doesn’t matter what time of day you walk into Tartine Bakery it is packed. But if you get into line with the optimism of an eight year old, as I did last week with my young friend Izzy, you will be able to snag a table by the time your cappuccino is made. It is always busy at Tartine because it appeals to the eight year old in all of us. Chocolate chip cookies are huge, banana cream and coconut cream tarts sit under a tall drift of whipped cream, rose petals are scattered over puffy cake tops, deep, dark chocolate éclairs glisten, creamy bread pudding murmurs comfort.

On our way to Golden Gate Park to watch the free annual opera event we decided to stop at Tartine and pick up a picnic. The wait for the delicious-sounding 'Hot Sandwiches' was 15 minutes so we chose from items that were ready to go immediately.

There's something sinfully delicious about sitting at a sunny sidewalk table in the middle of a weekday eating a pastry. In addition to affording those who don't work normal hours (and people like me who just have the week off) the ability to eat in the sun, Tartine also happens to have simple, delectable lunch fare.
