Earlier this week, an old friend came to town, and we planned to meet for a drink at Alembic; she's a bartender and I knew I wanted to take her somewhere with creative drinks and a spirits list to rival the best places in Manhattan. Plus, I mostly just love the vibe there, and the fact that you can generally hear the person you're sitting with. As it turned out, we were both hungry so decided to grab a table instead of waiting for seats at the (packed) bar. I'd had a few nibbles here before, and had been quite pleased, so I was looking forward to making a meal of the simple and well-thought-out menu of high-brow bar food. We ordered our... FULL REVIEW

Love at First Sip This morning I woke up (in my own bed, thankfully) to find myself still dressed in yesterday's wardrobe. I am not implying I wear old-fashioned clothes although these days I probably do, I am simply sharing with you the embarrassing piece of news that apparently I fell asleep last night without first disrobing. I blame this squarely on the influence of The Alembic Bar. The Alembic Bar was love at first sip. True love. You know - the kind of love that will probably kill you in the end. I stopped eating in the Upper Haight a long time ago—my twenties ended, and so that was it. Meeting up with friends at Cha Cha Cha, Kan Zaman, and El Balazo (man, can their staff be icy—I had to boycott them years ago) went the way of Bruno at Aub Zam Zam (rest in peace, old guy—SF's original martini Nazi). Yes, the food at Magnolia can offer a safe haven, and breakfast at the Pork Store can function like a SWAT team on your hangover, but otherwise, the only thing that could get me to saddle up and head on over to this neck of the panhandling trustafarian woods would be the promise of bourbon and some bites at ~THE ALEMBIC~.
