Walking into the Slanted Door is like walking into a trendy hip restaurant in NYC with buzzing energy. Before I even get into the unique and delightful smells coming from the kitchen, my eyes are welcomed by the beautiful people of San Francisco sitting along the massively long bar. If that’s not enough, directly behind the bar are several community cocktail tables and couches where friends seem to be catching up over desert island sort of drinks.

Proving that it is possible to get reservations at this place. We bunrabs visit this stylish and swank Ferry Building eating and drinking place.

Do pictures of food speak for themselves? Can you tell if I loved my lunch at The Slanted Door by images alone? Let's find out. I'm not going to say any more--just going to post lunch pictures with labels so...

You might recall that awhile back we wrote up a little report on The Slanted Door. As it turns out, The Slanted Door is actually remarkably consistent in terms of both preparation and service, so our opinion has not really changed much since that last post. However, Short Exact had the chance to visit again [...]

Some of you may already know that I’ll be traveling to Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon next week (whoo-hoo!), so I decided to put myself in the right frame of mind for that country’s tasty, fresh street food. Some of the best culinary delights in Vietnam are purchased from street vendors scooping up bowls of pho (the noodle soup) and bun (rice vermicelli noodles without the soup) or assembling fresh ingredients sandwiched in a crusty French baguette to create a banh mi.

Ever since the The Slanted Door moved into its current location in the San Francisco Ferry Building, I seem to dine at the restaurant much less frequently. Reservations are virtually impossible to get without significant advance planning, service is sometimes less than fully attentive, and the host staff frequently gives off the impression that they're doing diners a personal favor. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge Chef-Owner Charles Phan the enormous success that he has achieved, and it's been fascinating to watch the restaurant evolve from its humble beginnings on Valencia Street to the juggernaut that it is today. But any notion I have of dining at the restaurant is immediately accompanied by thoughts of the sheer hassle of it all, and that is usually enough to dissuade me from actually doing so.

On Giao's second to last day at work, he had lunch with some colleagues at The Slanted Door, a popular (good but expensive) upscales Vietnamese place in the Ferry Building.

After spending $70+ hoo-hahs on my dinner at Jardiniere, I decided to continue my exorbitant spending and dine at the Slanted Door in the San Francisco's picturesque Ferry Building for lunch with my co-worker's last week. First, let me give you a little background on the Ferry Building. After being renovated and transformed into one of the city's architectural masterpieces, the Ferry Building is the ultimate gathering ground for a Bay Area gourmand. The Ferry Building restaurants alone merit the Passionate Eater Seal of Approval. In addition, the weekly farmer's market attracts throngs of eager crowds who congregate around the abundant vegetable stands. The fragrances from pollened blossoms, and voluptuous fruits are invigorating for any passerby, chef or non-chef.

This restaurant seems to be perpetually crowded and bustling, and it’s not difficult to see why. Located in an open and airy space at a prime location in the Ferry Building, the casual elegance of The Slanted Door and the attentive service welcomes hundreds of eager diners daily. They are always crowded, despite being open for both lunch and dinner everyday of the week, and reservations are strongly recommended.

After arriving in SF on Friday, there were a couple places I've been craving for, one of them being the Slanted Door. I really love Vietnamese food, having been influenced by my madre, who's spent a half year or so in Saigon when she was a young globe-trotter. Now, onto the food.

We Now Bring You Episode 4 of the Slanted Door Saga
Just when I think I'm out, I get pulled right back in...So the food is as great as it ever was at my good old SD. When the Ferry Building location first opened, I found it to have slipped a bit, but now the rolls and soups and claypots and fishes and delishes are all back to their previously hailed glory.

I loved SD when it was in the Mission. Anytime we were shooting at Sandbox Studios, I always requested lunch there... the grapefruit & jicama salad was probably my single favorite thing on the menu.

Well, it has officially started snowing here in the soon to be frozen tundra of Boston. But what better to make one think of sunny California than food pictures? Well, at least the food eaten during that sunny California weather... Here's another trip to the new Slanted Door, this time with my mom, Auntie Cathy, Auntie Margie and the Chus.

A reader gave the great suggestion of putting up prices along with all the food, so I'll do this whenever I have the right prices. Food in HK has been great, but still got lots to go from SF. I'll catch up eventually... My mom and I ate at the new Slanted Door for lunch a while ago at the Ferry Building.

Long had I heard the praises of this Vietnamese fusion restaurant, and yesterday I got to sample its wares. The result? It's certainly good, but didn't live up to the reputation.
