I was at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market this morning in San Francisco and there was a long line outside The Gardener store. I thought they were giving away free samples of something, but when I checked out the front of the line, I saw the queen of sustainable food herself, Alice Waters. This Berkeley legend, traveling around the country peddling her latest book, The Art of Simple Food, is finally making the rounds closer to home. Her latest book focuses on simple standards that'll bring fresh, organic, seasonal dishes to your home. It's gotten mixed reviews for its approach (read the LA Times' review by Russ Parsons). Despite what people...

I went to San Francisco this past weekend for a quick visit to one of my favorite cities in the world. I lived in the city for 8 years, and go back whenever I get a chance. There's just something about San Francisco that has always felt like home to me; I feel an instant click whenever I am there. The people, the weather, the politics...it's just more me than Los Angeles will ever be. All that said, the cuisine is a major reason why I love SF. But this time around, I was plagued with bad luck when it came to the food. The only photo I took was of the best dish I had - the famed chilaquiles at the Primavera booth at the Ferry Building...

Schiacciata con l'uva & Chestnut Flour at the San Francisco Ferry Building
This Weekend's Highlights... This is the ACME bread version of a traditional flatbread made in Tuscany during the wine grape harvest. According to ACME, who I think must have taken their information from this website, it is such a classic it can be seen pictured on the frescoes in Etruscan tombs and the name is derived from the schiacciare which means 'flattened' or 'crushed'. Acme's rendition of this seasonal offering made a very special and unique lunch for me today. I loved the dough which was crisp on the outside but billowy and soft within, it was chewy and crunchy all at the same time. Big fat juicy green and purple grapes...

It's Saturday and what better way to spend the morning than at the Ferry Building Farmers' Market? If you're a local, it's the place to be, even in the fog.

Something to Ponder Regular readers will know that I love to celebrate all of the wonderful items available at the San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers' market here on my blog. I buy nearly all of my fresh produce there, with only the occasional visit to Wholefoods or Rainbow Grocery to maintain a well-stocked pantry of dried goods, grains and flours to supplement the seasonal fresh produce that makes up most of my diet. It is understandable that something as popular and as liked as San Francisco's Market should attract its fair share of critics. But when you are all gooey-eyed and ga-ga about something you all but unconditionally love,...

I noticed that they were serving little pizzas with a choice of several toppings at the Vicolo company stand during the Ferry Building Farmer's Market. These are preassembled, organic, cornmeal-based pizzas that use natural ingredients and no preservatives. The people who work there are very nice and are interested in producing a high quality product. The 5” goat cheese pizza ($5.95) with roasted peppers and herbs wasn’t my thing. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t bad or anything. I must have a corn intolerance (as far as pizza goes) but I could see how there would be those who would differ.

The line at the Primavera stand at the Saturday Ferry Building Farmer’s market was worth the wait. Luckily we ran into friends and caught up while our chow was prepared.

Just to see how the other half lives, we went to the San Francisco Ferry Building's Farmer’s Market at 8:30 this morning. Our habit of rolling in later in the day delivers the penalties of massive crowds and limited selection.

There are those motivated and energetic enough to make it to the Saturday Ferry Building Farmer’s Market early and there are those who refuse to set the alarm and must pay the penalty of jumping into the veggie mosh pit later in the day.

Where to begin? The Ferry Building, at the end of Market St, facing the East Bay, was one of few city buildings to survive the earthquake of 1906 (we know this because of the excellent exhibit of photos of the quake's aftermath at the SFMoma). Now, it houses a treasure trove of food shops, from chocolate to cheese to seafood to caviar to mushrooms and more. On Saturdays, the bounty expands exponentially with an outdoor farmer's market added to the mix--fresh produce from nearby farms, as well as homemade butter, canned vegetables, heirloom honeys, freshmade yogurt--it's truly ridiculous. We marvelled, we sampled, we feasted.

A couple of weeks ago, one of my colleagues came to San Francisco for a couple of days of training. Fortunately, Sarah is one of those people that I'd be friends with even if we didn't work together, so it was a great chance to hit a few favorite places for lunch and dinner, as well.

Today at San Francisco's Ferry Building Farmer's Market
Thank you to the farmer who is clearing out his leek patch to make way for the tomatoes. Today the tiniest, little baby leeks were available. They were even smaller than the fresh green garlic. Click on the picture to make them look a little bigger.

It has been raining almost everyday since Christmas. But that hasn’t stopped the brave and hungry among us to go forth and find even more wonderful things to eat. I was reluctantly persuaded to head down to the San Francisco Ferry Terminal today for lunch with some colleagues, and I've come back a transformed man. What they have done in the process of remodeling the terminal is incredible, and not only is the building gorgeous, they have populated it with some of San Francisco's most elite gourmet outlets and some excellent restaurants.
