Back when we reviewed Mescolanza, we rather dismissively stated that, for the most part, San Francisco’s most treasured Italian restaurants were not to be found in North Beach. While this is generally true, every rule has its exceptions, and Da Flora is a most notable one. Despite its location on busy, touristy Columbus Avenue, in the heart of North Beach, the Venetian restaurant Da Flora is really exactly the sort of place that locals dream about, and it is definitely one of the less touristy establishments in the area.

I found Da Flora by chance one hot fall evening soon after they opened. Things weren’t going very well that night. They were clearly over-booked and under-staffed. Yet while we were probably there three times longer than we should have been, I was hooked. I had just returned from a month in Italy and being at Da Flora was like being in Italy and at home.

My mom received a recommendation from someone to try out Da Flora, a small Italian place at the edge of North Beach. The place really is quite small, occupying a weird corner space of a very sharp block on Columbus. Racks of wine cover the back wall, while a presumably tiny kitchen is hidden somewhere in the back. The menu came handwritten, which was a nice homely touch. Completely unrelated: I'm about 80% sure that Chris Moneymaker (he won the World Series of Poker a couple of years ago) was eating a couple of tables away from us. I have no idea what he would be in SF for (this was like 2 weeks ago, so it's possible he was here just before the WSOP started), but it really really looked like him! Anyway, on to the food...

What can I say? When it's my favorite Italian restaurant in the City, I'm gonna go back a few times. Here's the prior review for reference.
FULL REVIEW
This tiny Venitian restaurant has rapidly become my favorite source of Italian food in the city. The location, a real hole-in-the-wall comprised of perhaps 8 tables, and full of candles, dark red walls, and all sorts of Venitian decor, is quite the romantic spot. The wine list, which is quite extensive (over 6 pages now, I believe), is comprised entirely of Italian wines, and unless you're really up on your Italian vineyards, you likely won't recognize any of them. Lucky for you, the owner knows every wine on the list like the back of her hand (and likely better; how well do you know the back of your hand?), and she can describe them in astounding and mouth-watering detail. The menu changes on a regular basis, and is small and hand-written.
